Wendy froze at the doorway, completely unprepared for the sight before her.

Jessica was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed. Stanley, dressed in his patient gown, lay there still unconscious. Jessica reached out, gently caressing Stanley’s handsome face, her gaze lingering with a strange, intimate warmth.
Halsey’s voice broke the silence. “Jessica, what are you doing here”
Jessica turned and saw Wendy and Halsey standing at the door.
She stood up immediately and walked over to Wendy, curling her lips into a sly smile.
“What a surprise to see you here! Today’s supposed to be the day Stanley and you get married, but he’s been with me all along. You must have been waiting at the courthouse the whole day, huh? Honestly, I kind of feel sorry for you.”
Halsey opened her mouth to speak, but Wendy stopped her with a glance. Wendy fixed Jessica with a cold stare. “You’ve been with Stanley the whole day?”
“Yeah,” Jessica said with a casual shrug. “We’ve known each other for years. He’s always had a place for me in his heart. You’re not jealous, are you?”
Now, Wendy understood Brittany’s feelings perfectly. Love and engagement–those were narrow spaces that could only hold two people. Any third party would stand out like a sore thumb, especially when that third party was a sworn enemy.
Wendy let out a cold laugh. “Don’t worry. I’m not jealous.”
With that, she turned away without a hint of emotion and left the room.
Halsey’s eyes blazed with anger as she glared at Jessica.
“You really are everywhere, aren’t you? You can’t be happy unless you’re interfering in someone else’s relationship. You’re a shameless homewrecker!”
After throwing the insult, Halsey stormed off.
Jessica’s face flushed with fury. “What did you just call me?”
But Wendy and Halsey were already gone, leaving Jessica to simmer in her anger alone.
Wendy’s expression had been so calm, so unreadable–completely unlike what Jessica had expected. She had thought Wendy would break down, get jealous, maybe even lash out like a furious woman. But Wendy’s reaction was mild, like she didn’t care, and that made Jessica even more furious.
Just then, Stanley stirred and opened his eyes.
Jessica quickly turned back to him. “Stanley, you’re awake!”
Stanley looked pale as he scanned the room and then sat up slowly. “How did I end up in the hospital?”
Jessica answered, “You fainted outside. I brought you here.”
