Horace and Brittany stepped forward, their expressions full of frustration toward their daughter–as if she just wasn’t living up to their hopes.
“Hello, Jessica.”
Jessica shot them a glare, clearly annoyed. “Shut up!”
The atmosphere froze instantly.
Halsey stepped in smoothly. “Ms. Larson, today’s supposed to be happy day. Maybe you should try to keep your temper in check.”
Jessica snorted in reply.
“What’s so happy about today? Is it because my parents are officially making Wendy their goddaughter? Now there’s someone else fighting for their love?”
Her eyes locked onto Horace and Brittany’s faces.
“Do you even see me as your daughter? Where do I fit now that you’ve taken Wendy in as a goddaughter?”
The other company leaders nearby started whispering among themselves.
“What’s going on? Is Ms. Larson upset about Mr. and Mrs. Larson naming Ms. Wendy their goddaughter?”
“Looks like she came here just to cause trouble.”
“She’s definitely not here to celebrate–she’s already making a scene.”
Jessica wasn’t here to play along. When Horace and Brittany handed her the gilded invitation, she took it—but she was clearly here to disrupt things.
Ida watched Jessica’s reaction with satisfaction and pretended to offer advice. “Just let it go. They’re free to take in a goddaughter.”
“Why should I let it go? I’m their real daughter, the only rightful heiress! Mom, Dad, I don’t agree with you naming Wendy your goddaughter today. I won’t allow it!”
Jessica’s refusal was loud and clear.
Gasps echoed through the room.
Horace frowned deeply. “The decision’s been made. This isn’t something we needed to discuss with you.”
Brittany added, “Yes, disagreeing won’t change anything. Honestly, you should learn from Wendy. Look at all the mistakes you’ve made lately and the people you’ve hurt!”
Jessica’s face darkened. “I said no, but you’re still going with your plan?”
“Yes,” Horace and Brittany answered in unison, “Wendy is our daughter now.”
Jessica’s hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. Horace and Brittany were humiliating her in front of everyone–her own parents made her feel more like a stranger than a daughter.
Halsey smiled slyly. “You should know that kind people are well loved, while wicked ones don’t have many supporters. I suggest that instead of causing a scene here, you spend some time improving yourself. Maybe figure out how to be a good daughter and a person of character.”
Jessica hated Halsey. Her sharp tongue reminded her too much of Wendy.
Jessica stared at her parents again. “You have to make a choice today.”

“What choice?” Horace asked.
Jessica raised her voice. “I despise Wendy! I’ve made it clear I don’t want her to be your goddaughter. Now, you have to choose between me and Wendy. Are you picking me as your daughter or her?”
Horace and Brittany’s faces darkened.
Jessica pressed on fiercely, “If you pick Wendy, then you lose me, your real daughter, for good! The choice is yours.”
Now Jessica was forcing Horace and Brittany to choose.
People nearby started whispering.
“Didn’t expect Ms. Larson to cause trouble at this party.”
“They have to choose between the real daughter and the goddaughter. How will Mr. and Mrs. Larson decide?”
