Chapter 12
Two blinks.
He couldn’t believe the relief he felt from the sound of her voice. “Oh!” Her eyes grew bright, and the scarred side of her face lifted and tightened before she turned and whispered her thoughts out loud, “What could he want, Bea?”
Bea? Is that her name? Instantly, he started fast blinking and she turned towards him; eyebrows lifted. “Do you simply want me to talk?”
Two blinks. Please. Please keep talking to me.
“Oh.” And then she dared to look disgruntled before asking, “About what? I thought since I’m a slave and you know I’m a slave, it would be inappropriate for me to speak with you. That’s the custom I’m used to, anyway.” Her eyes shifted to the side before she looked down.
He felt something inside him shift. He wasn’t sure what it was. He couldn’t possibly feel protective over her but hearing that she might have been treated poorly made the sides of his eyes see red. He didn’t blink, he just stared up at her as he composed himself.
“But… I do miss talking. It was the first time since I lost my parents.” She paused and looked back up at him.
Two blinks.
“But you know that I’m not Savonnuh. It would be inappropriate, even if I AM your wife.”
He blinked several times. He wanted her to keep going. He wanted to know everything, anything. He felt starved for attention. Maybe that’s because he truly
was.
She laughed before saying, “Okay! uhm, one blink if you want more answers on why I’m Savonnuh or two blinks about me being your wife?”
He blinked three times. He wanted it all. In a matter of hours, this woman had become incredibly important to him. She was his one key to freedom! He’d already done more physically in the last day than he had all year long and it was all thanks to her.
His attention turned from internal thoughts to that of the girl as she spun a tale from her experiences over the past few weeks. Savonnuh’s death. The cold carriage ride to his castle. She even explained how he was exiled for attempting to murder his father and the Ex–Beta was marked as a traitor for colluding with him.
Then she said, “When Rebecca saw how ugly I she said the scars make my name more fitting.” She smiled for a short moment. “Since you know I’m not Savonnuh, you might as well know my name. It’s nice to meet you Prince Dax, I’m Beastly but please think of me as Bea.”

Beastly? They named her BEASTLY? His thoughts were scattered, and his emotions were almost as split. He was angry because of the treatment she’d undergone at the hands of people he thought were friends. Even
him was the fact that he was charged with Treason and attempted murder
of his father.

She’d mentioned at one point that she KNEW who started the fire and he wanted to do anything necessary to talk again, if just to ask her about that. He told himself that these were the reasons he was excited to be talking with a slave and not because he cared for that slave.
Not knowing his thoughts, she smiled and then almost as an aft
thought she said, “I wonder if you can talk.” She was still leaning over Dax when he heard the door to his room open and he watched Bea jerk back in surprise and turn to
