Halsey felt a strong aversion toward Gilbert. After finally shaking im off tonight, he was back again with a dermand for a family meeting.
“Mom, I don’t want to see him! Sure, we were engaged, but he betrayed me by cheating with Sienna. He was the one who called off the engagement, so I think that makes the agreement null android. I’m never marrying him!”
“Halsey, your father and I are definitely on your side. We believe you should marry a man with good character. Gilbert never truly cared for you—he only used you to connect with our family. We haven’t forgotten that.
“But the Greenwoods have grown powerful in recent years. Our families have long–standing ties and intertwined interests that aren’t easy to break. Just now, they called, pleading for us to give them a chance and meet with thern. I couldn’t say no. Why don’t we meet with them tomorrow? We can end this engagement properly, face to face,” Patricia suggested.
As the Lincoln family’s heiress, Halsey knew that with privilege came responsibility. She couldn’t afford to tear their families
apart.
Halsey nodded. “Fine. We’ll meet tomorrow. I’ll make things clear with Gilbert.”
“Great.”
The next day, Halsey returned home after dropping Madeline off at the research base.
Patricia led her to Vista Dining. This was where the Lincolns and Greenwoods had agreed to meet.
Halsey and Patricia stepped into the luxurious private room, where Yvette and Gilbert were already waiting.
Yvette stood up, greeting warmly, “Mrs. Lincoln, Halsey. It’s good to see you.”
Gilbert’s eyes locked on Halsey. Today, she wore a Chanel dress, her long hair flowing freely, exuding a pure and gentle charm that turned heads everywhere.
There was a light in Gilbert’s eyes. After chasing Halsey for so long without success, here she was now, appearing obediently before him.
He believed that soon enough, she would be in his bed.
He curled his lips into a smirk. “You look nice.”
Halsey glanced at him coldly, then looked away.
‘Gilbert wasn’t angry at all. The more Halsey resisted, the more he liked it. Once they were married, he’d settle the score with her in bed.
His feelings for Halsey were a confusing mix of love and hate–a maddening, unbearable kind of obsession.
“Please,” Patricia said, “take a seat.”
The four of them took their seats.
Patricia looked at Yvette. “We’re here to discuss the marriage between Halsey and Gilbert, but I recall that Gilbert called off the engagement three years ago. So, that agreement is no longer valid.
Patricia got straight to the point.
Yvette smiled immediately. “Three years ago, Gilbert was young and immature. That cancellation didn’t count. Our families go way back, and this alliance is the best way to secure our interests for the future. Don’t you agree?”
Patricia didn’t respond to that. “That may be true, but a marriage is a serious matter. Ultimately, it’s the children’s wishes that matter. I respect their opinions.”
