Chapter 12: The Death of a Fox

“Death” Alpha Han’s cold expression made me want to tear his arms off. He’s talking about taking something from his daughter and her dying. What kind of father does that?
“What happened after you brought Hyun Ara back here?” Father was great at integration because he and Kaan could control their anger. I still had a lot to learn. L
“I kept her alive so she could give birth to the half–breed. I tried negotiating with her to give me the marble once the child was born, but she refused. A Gumiho needs living hearts and life forces to maintain their strength.” It’s well known that if a god accepts an offering, they are forced by natural law to grant the wish of the being giving the offering. This must have been hard for Hyun Ara. “I would bring her humans and Omegas to temp her since all her strength and life force went into her pregnancy. But she would not agree. She stayed that way for 16 months. I guess pregnancy takes longer for gods. She ate human food to maintain her body, but that was it.” Alpha Han paused and glared at my mate. I gave him a warning snarl. He dropped his head and let out a breath, then continued: “A week before she gave birth Hyun Ara, swallowed the yeowoo guseul. I thought it was to give it to her child, but when An Jieun was born, she didn’t have a marble. I waited 18 years to see if it would generate, but it did not. I now think An Jieun is a walking yeowoo guseul. She cannot leave this pack. She is too dangerous.”
I pushed Alpha Han back as he inched closer to An Jieun. Suddenly An Jieun jumps out from behind me, extends a single claw, and cuts her face. I’m horrified at what’s going on, then Alpha Han screams, and I turn back, and he has the same cut on his face. I turn back to An Jieun, and her cut is gone. “What the hell just happened?” I was so shocked and confused; any answer from anyone would
be great.
“Mother curse.” An Jieun hissed out.
“Curse, what curse?” I looked at dad, and he just shook his head, as confused as I was. We both looked at Alpha Han. “Hey, what curse?”
Alpha Han sneered, “That demon of a fox cured me using the last bit of her life force right after she named An Jieun. If any harm falls on our child, I will also have the same injury or death.”

“Wait, does it go both ways?” I was scared that we were hurting her by putting pressure or e Alpha.
“No.” An Jieun shook her head. My whole body relaxed a little.
“Why doesn’t An Jieun have the family name Han and why isn’t she part of the pack?” dad wanted

to get things wrapped up. So much just happened. My brain was in knots; I didn’t know how he kept everything straight.
“I didn’t name her; Hyun Ara did. She was a god, so when she named An Jieun, it was finally. You can’t overwrite a god. She’s not part of the pack because she refused to become a pack member. I can’t force her. I kept her locked away in a house on the edge of pack lands. I should have known all this time. How did I not know she was the marble.” Alpha Han slammed his head into the floor like a
crazy person.
“What are you doing?” Dad was annoyed with the whole scene. So was I.
“Kill her. I am ready to die for what I have done. Your son will get a second chance mate if she dies. Please don’t let her out in the world. She’s pure evil and will kill anyone.” Alpha Han again slammed
his head on the floor, this time breaking the skin.
“I am not going to kill my son’s mate. If the goddess has decided she will be the Ashwood pack’s Luna someday, then there’s a reason, and we, as her chosen, will listen. It’s late. Let’s go back to the hotel. An Jieun will be coming with us.” Dad pushes out his aura to make sure there’s no resistance. “James, Rylie, take An Jieun to her house to get her things.” Dad kneels on one knee and smiles softly at An Jieun, “You are my daughter now, An Jieun; tell James when you are ready, and we will
go.”
An Jieun bowed, “Thank you, Alpha.”
The three of us left the office quickly. Rylie and I followed An Jieun in silence for most of the walk to her house. My head was still trying to piece this all together. I had always imagined my mate would be a normal wolf with a personality like my sisters. This whole half–god thing was so freaky weird. It’s so out there that I would never have excepted it. Then on top of the whole, she’s a demigod, and I’m scared I’m going to upset her. I don’t know what to do; she was treated like crap for so long that. I don’t know how to approach her.
I look up and see a tiny house that I would call more like a shack. It’s not the size that’s the issue; it looks run down. I feel my anger boiling again. An Jieun turns and looks up at me. I feel like she’s analyzing my face. I stiffen up.
“Come in. Help. Not lot.” Her speech seems to be smoothing out a little bit. It’s still choppy, but I
know what she means.
Rylie and I go in, and it looks better on the inside. It’s clean and organized; it smells like tea and small sweet flowers. There was a small table with cushions around it in the middle of the roo kitchenette and a bed that looked like it was for a toddler because it was so small.
An Jieun went to a closet and started putting clothes on the bed. Then she went to the kitchenette and picked up a tray with an old–looking teapot and a cup without a handle. “Um, do you need some help gathering your things?” I didn’t know if I should touch anything or not. I didn’t want to upset

her. Rylie just leans against the wall waiting to leave.
“No. That all.” She points to the bed, and I realize there’s nothing to put everything in. No duffel bag, suitcase, nothing. She was never meant to leave this tiny, so–called house. I start to step to the little bed to gather everything up in my arms when An Jieun uses the blanket on the bed to bundle everything up. Well, that does make things easier.
I pick up the bundle, “Is this it?” It’s not much to say this is all her belongings.
“Yes.” It is a sweet and happy smile which is really confusing. I want to give her the world. I never want her to be able to put her life into a small bundle again.
It’s strange to think about. What would you take with you if you had to leave home? What’s important and why? Rylie elbows me. “Hey, you OK? You’re just standing there with this weird look on your face.”
I snap out of my swirling mind. “Yeah, sorry, man. An Jieun, you ready?“. She nods, and we head back to the packhouse to meet our dads and get out of here.
