Halsey nearly choked on her steak. “Mom! What are you talking about? I don’t think of Calvin that way!”
Patricia shrugged. “Well, you’re not getting any younger. You couldn’t forget Shaun before, but now he’s moved on with his life. It’s time for you to start fresh, too. You won’t be young forever. I was just talking with Mrs. Johnson, and she gently brought up the idea of a match between our families. She really likes you, and your dad and I like Calvin a lot.”
Calvin was the scholarly one in their circle. He had good character and was well–mannered, practically flawless in every way. Patricia and Cyril held him in high regard.
Halsey sighed. “That’s not on my mind right now.”
“Well, it should. Don’t be stubborn and waste your youth. We just want you to find someone who loves you and gives you a home, “Patricia said, her tone full of earnest concern.
Not wanting to worry her parents, Halsey replied, “I know. Just give me a little time.”
Patricia placed a slice of food on Halsey’s plate. “Eat up first. You’ve lost weight these past few days.”
Later, Halsey slipped into the restroom. She stood at the sink, splashing cold water on her face before stepping out. Her mood was heavy, and she just wanted to get back and rest.
As she walked down the hallway, her phone buzzed. A text from Madeline lit up the screen.
Seeing Madeline’s name lifted Halsey’s spirits.
[I’m coming home in a couple of days.]
Halsey smiled brightly. [Really? I’ll have someone prepare your favorite dishes. Come home early.]
She wanted to tell Madeline about Shaun, but hesitated. It didn’t feel right to say it over text. So, she typed, [I have some good news for you when you get back.]
Madeline replied, [Okay! I miss you.]
Halsey’s lips curved softly into a smile. She was so focused on typing that she didn’t watch where she was going–she suddenly bumped right into someone, her forehead pressing against a firm, warm chest.
She stepped back quickly. “I’m so sorry! I…”
Her words caught in her throat when she realized who it was–Shaun.
Halsey froze.
Shaun stood tall and lean in the hallway, his gaze fixed on her. “What’s this? Don’t you recognize me anymore? Or are you just pretending not to know me?”
Halsey blinked, snapping back to herself. “Sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
He could tell she hadn’t been paying attention. She had been busy typing, a happy smile lingering on her lips.
Shaun’s lips curved into a faint smile. “I thought you had forgotten who I am.”
“Of course not,” Halsey said quickly. “You just helped me recently. I won’t forget that.”
Shaun watched her polite but distant demeanor, and said nothing
Whenever he stayed silent, Halsey felt a pressure settle over her the kind of presence only someone powerful could radiate.
She shifted uncomfortably. “Anyway, I should get going.”
With that, she turned on her heel and tried to brush past him.
