Madeline raced to the GM Tech headquarters as fast as she could, determined to see her brother right away.
When she reached the lobby, the receptionist stopped her at the front desk.
“Hello, may I ask who you’re here to see?” the receptionist asked, eyeing Madeline carefully.
Madeline took a breath. “I’m here to see Shaun.”
The receptionist gave Madeline a quick once–over. Lately, so many women had been coming to see their CEO.
“Do you have an appointment?”
Madeline shook her head. “No, but could you please let him know I’m here? My name is Madeline, and Shaun is my brother.”
“What? You’re Mr. Lane’s sister?” The receptionist’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Yes, I am. He’ll want to see me. Please, just go and tell him now. It’s urgent.”
The receptionist smirked. “What’s up with people today? Just a little while ago, some woman claimed to be Mr. Lane’s close friend, and now you show up saying you’re his sister. Should I start saying I’m Mrs. Lane next?”
Madeline’s voice faltered. “But I’m not lying. Shaun really is my brother. Everything I’m saying is true.”
The receptionist waved her off impatiently. “Look, no appointment means no meeting. You need to leave now.”
Madeline bristled. “Hey-”
Before she could say more, Chelsea stepped forward. “What’s going on here?”
The receptionist’s attitude instantly flipped to eager and flattering “Ms. Sutton, why are you down here?‘
“Shaun’s still in a meeting, and I didn’t want to disturb him, so I came out for a walk,” Chelsea said casually. “What’s happening?”
The receptionist pointed at Madeline. “Another woman wants to see Mr. Lane.‘
Chelsea looked at Madeline with a sharp, assessing gaze. She didn’t know who this woman was, but every woman who came looking for Shaun triggered her suspicion and wariness. Even though Shaun hadn’t had anyone by his side these past three years, there was never a shortage of women throwing themselves at him.
“You’re here to see Shaun?” Chelsea asked, voice cool.
Chelsea’s stare made Madeline uneasy. She returned the look. “Who are you? What’s your relationship with Shaun?” Chelsea smiled, but it wasn’t warm. “I think I should be asking you that. What’s your connection to Shaun? Why are you here?” Madeline squared her shoulders. “I’m here because I need to talk to him. If he knew I was here, he’d drop everything and come to me.”
Chelsea smirked. “You’re pretty confident. Ms. Halsey
was
here not long ago, and she didn’t seem nearly as sure of herself.”
Madeline frowned. So Halsey had met this woman, too? Why had this woman been around Shaun all these years?
Madeline didn’t like Chelsea one bit.
“I’m not interested in talking to you. I want to see Shaun,” Madeline said firmly.
The receptionist quickly interjected, “Who do you think you are, taking to Ms. Sutton like that? You’ve got some nerve!”
Madeline’s eyes narrowed. “Actually, I’d like to know who Ms. Sution is and why I can’t speak to her like this. Isn’t this Shaun’s company?”

The receptionist smiled knowingly. “Mr. Lane is our boss, and Ms. Sutton here is second in command.”
