Chapter 14 Just Make It Harder
The guard remained impassive. “I don’t know who you are,” he answered. “Either show. your membership card or let someone inside bring you in. It’s the rule, no exceptions.” Chris’s temper flared. “I’m Tyler’s nephew, Chris. Who gave you the guts to stop me?” Serena, trying to make a good impression on Tyler, had chosen a figure–hugging black halter dress, but now, standing out in the scorching sun, she felt like her skin was roasting off. The heat from her outfit made everything worse, and beads of sweat dotted her forehead. Still, she put on a sweet smile. “This gentleman really is Tyler’s nephew. Just let him in, I’ll wait outside.”
The guard didn’t even acknowledge her. “Just wait here.”
They waited for another few minutes, but Chris was losing his patience. “Are you going to move or not?” He snapped. “If you don’t, I’ll have Tyler fire you!”
“Mr. Langford is busy, not seeing anyone right now,” the guard replied coldly.
Chris shot him a glare, fuming, and pulled out his phone. He dialed Tyler’s number while muttering through gritted teeth, “You’ll be looking for a new job soon.”
“Who’s looking for a new job?” Tyler’s voice crackled from the phone.
Startled, Chris swallowed his anger. He wasn’t about to act out in front of Tyler. “Tyler, we’re at the door, but these guys won’t let us in. What should we do?”
“I see. Just one second,” answered Tyler.
It was another ten minutes before someone came out from inside. After confirming Chris’s identity, they finally let him and Serena in. Chris shot a smug look at the guard, but the man didn’t flinch.
The club was spread over three floors: the ground floor was a dining area and a tea lounge, the second floor was a leisure area with a game room and pool tables, and the top floor was reserved for private rooms.
Chris and Serena were led to the third floor, still brooding over the earlier insult. Membership here wasn’t cheap, so he figured if he had a word with Tyler, maybe he could get the fee waived.
When the door to the room opened, Chris froze. Inside wasn’t just Tyler, but several unfamiliar faces too. Every one of them had a strikingly seductive woman at their side.
Chris stepped inside, dragging Serena along. “Tyler, you wanted to see us?”
Tyler’s sharp gaze settled on Serena, inspecting her like she was some puzzle piece. So you’re the one who stole Eleanor’s fiancé?”
Serena’s face shifted between red and pale. She lowered her voice, defensive. “Tyler, you’re mistaken.”
Tyler sneered, a bitter edge to his words. “Who told you to call me by my first name?”

Serena’s eyes brimmed with hurt, but she swallowed it down. “Mr. Langford, I-”
One of the other people in the room laughed coldly, cutting her off. “She looks like someone who came from a poor background, doesn’t she? I heard she even had depression. Must be too much free time on her hands.”
Serena was taken aback, not sure how to respond. She just stared at them, eyes wide and innocent, holding back tears.
“Well, a brute can’t savor finesse, another voice chimed in, a sneer in it. “Isn’t she adopted by the Donovan family? Even if she was taken in, she’s still low–born, no matter how you look at her.”
“You-” Chris snapped, stepping in front of Serena protectively. “You can’t talk like that. You’ve got no right to judge Serena just because Tyler favors Eleanor!”
“Hah!” One of the men chuckled. “Now you’re the one who’s sensitive? This is the world we live in. It’s all about playing the game. These girls know how things go.” He then turned towards Serena, grinning. “Hey you, don’t be surprised if Chris has a new woman on his arm every few weeks. You better get used to it.”
Chris’s face darkened. “Don’t say things like that.”
“Am I lying?” the man countered, unfazed. “We’ve all seen it. When you were with Eleanor, you were swapping girls left and right. If she could put up with it, then Serena should too, right?”
Serena’s expression fluctuated between anger and disbelief. She slowly lowered her head, her fingers nervously tugging at Chris’s sleeve.
“She’s nothing like Eleanor,” Chris muttered, his tone tight. “If it had been her from the start, I wouldn’t have looked at anyone else.”
Tyler smirked, his eyes cold as he watched Chris. The others also let out a few chuckles and said, “If you really love someone, you’d be loyal, just like Mr. Langford, wouldn’t you?”
Chris couldn’t believe Tyler already had a woman in mind. He had never heard of it before. But he had no time paying attention to who the woman was–he saw Tyler turned to Serena, gaze sharp and cold.
“If you want to replace Eleanor, you better show me you can handle it,” said Tyler. “I heard Eleanor’s massage skills are quite impressive. Serena, you think you can serve my friends the way she did? They can also teach you how to
massage if you’re not very familiar with it.”
“What are you talking about, Tyler? Serena’s not here to be a servant!” Chris went pale, his grip tightening on Serena’s hand. “You’re putting too much favor on Eleanor, and you should understand that I will never marry her. My heart belongs to Serena.”
Tyler’s smirk widened. “What’s the difference? Eleanor did it, so why can’t Serena? I’ve got no problem with it. She’s welcome to stay behind, I need to have a word with her.”

Chris felt a knot in his stomach. He knew whatever Tyler was planning couldn’t be good. “Wait, Tyler,” he said. “What’s so important that I can’t hear?”
Tyler paused for a moment, then spoke. “Fine. You two can stay. Let everyone else step out.”
After a moment, the room cleared. Tyler’s cold gaze locked onto Chris. “Eleanor came to me a few days ago. You know what she asked?”
Chris shook his head, his heart racing.
Chris shook his head, his heart racing. “She wants to break off the engagement,” said Tyler. “But don’t worry, I won’t take your shares. Instead, I’ve got one condition–Serena, you need to publicly apologize to Eleanor and admit you were the one who interfered with their relationship.”
Serena’s face turned white. “I won’t!” she cried, indignant. “Chris and I love each other
for real.”
“Do you?” Tyler’s gaze was ice cold as he leaned back. “I’ve still got some things from three years ago, hidden with a reporter friend of mine. Think about it–what would. happen if that got exposed?”
Serena’s lips quivered, her face losing all color.
“Don’t worry,” Tyler added. “Eleanor’s only been asking for two things–both of them involve you, Chris. Honestly, I’m getting a bit tired of this. If you want Serena to marry you, just get the paperwork done quickly.”
Chris knew Tyler had something on Serena, but the first thing he wanted was to rush into marriage with Serena. He couldn’t wait to do the paperwork.
Exactly. Eleanor’s the most insufferable woman on the planet–what man could possibly put up with her? Chris believed that Tyler must’ve gotten fed up with her clinging to him all the time. That’s probably why he urged him to marry Serena, just to
shut the door on Eleanor once and for all.
“Alright, I think that’s a deal.” Tyler said with a dark chuckle. “I’ll be gone for a while.
When I come back, I expect you two to be a legal couple.”
