Chapter 22 The Ego Of Chris
Chris’s heart skipped a beat, and he instinctively glanced at Serena, a sense of unease creeping up on him. But he quickly regained his composure and replied, “You’re quite the character. On a day like this, meant to be all about celebration, you’re here throwing insults?”
“This is just a hypothetical,” the reporter said with a calm smile. “If you were an average guy with nothing special going for you, and Miss Farrell still had to compete with others for your affection, then surely it would be true love, right?”
“What kind of entertainment company are you with?” Chris snapped, his frustration rising. “I’ll go find your boss!”
“I’m
“Oh, I’m not with any entertainment company,” the reporter replied nonchalantly. from the local TV station, ‘The Divorce Lawyer.‘ We don’t get much traffic, but since we stumbled upon such a juicy story, the station director asked me to do a special interview.”
“A TV station?” Chris raised an eyebrow. A regular entertainment company he could handle, but a TV station? That was a different story entirely.
“I certainly wouldn’t mind,” Serena quickly interjected, trying to regain control of the
situation.
“Then, Mr. Chris, even if Miss Farrell committed some unspeakable crimes, would you still love her and marry her?” the reporter pressed. “If she murdered your mother, would you still cover for her?”
Serena’s eyes widened in shock. “What is this nonsense? I’ve never done anything. wrong. What are you trying to say?”
Chris was f
furious now. “I can tell you’re just here to stir up trouble! If you don’t leave, I‘ m calling the police.”
“Call the police?” the reporter chuckled. “Well, just so happens we’ve got some interesting information, something from about seven years ago. It was passed along to us by a Miss Donovan.”
With a loud crash, Serena knocked over her spray on the makeup table. Her face paled as she met Chris’s eyes, face glistening with unshed tears.
Chris clenched his fists, his voice cold. “A decent journalist should care about the facts. Did any of you even bother to investigate before throwing this out for clicks? Have you no shame?”
The reporter didn’t back down. “V Successfully unlocked! if there wasn’t any evidence. And speaking of morals–wasn’t it you, Mr. Chris, who once tried to have an innocent. person jailed based on hearsay? Funny how your standards only apply when it suits
you.”

Chris was speechless. He clenched his fists, his face hardening. He knew it–this was Eleanor’s doing.
“Get out now!” He roared. “Tell the person who sent you that I won’t bow down to them. She’ll never be the mistress of the Langford family!”
The reporter blinked, her expression tinged with pity. “A man with huge ego really is terrifying.”
She thought back to the girl who’d given her the information–who had looked down on Chris with disdain. The girl’s intentions were clear: she wanted an apology from this couple. While they hadn’t directly wronged her, the rumors they’d spread had done. their damage.
But surprisingly, she was willing to settle things quietly, hoping to avoid causing a scene at the wedding. Now, judging by the couple’s reaction, they had no idea how badly they’d messed up.
The reporter left the makeup room and saw Eleanor leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed. She wore a striking red evening gown that hugged her figure and drew attention to her slim waist, her hair elegantly styled in an updo, held in place by a diamond hairpin, giving her a regal and almost ethereal look.
“Miss Donovan, just as you expected, they didn’t apologize,” the reporter said with a knowing look.
Eleanor’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Just as I thought. We try diplomacy first, but that doesn’t work. Now it’s time to pull out the big guns.”
As soon as she heard the door of the dressing room open, Eleanor snapped out of her lazy pose, waved casually, and slipped away in a flash.
After the reporter’s interruption, Serena was visibly shaken. During the wedding rehearsal, she seemed distracted, her mind clearly elsewhere.
Seeing Serena like this only made Chris even more resentful toward Eleanor.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think Eleanor would still be holding onto feelings for me, Chris. murmured. “I thought she’d moved on, found someone else, but I never expected her to still be trying to hurt you.”
Serena felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She had thought she’d erased any trace of her past mistakes. She was the victim here. She had to remind herself that as long as she stuck to that story, she was in the clear.
“Chris, we need to find Eleanor. I’m afraid she’ll cause trouble at the wedding,” Serena said softly, her voice laced with concern.
“It’s fine,” Chris snapped, his eyes flashing with anger. “I know her well. She just wants. me to leave you for her. She can dream on! I’m marrying you, and we’ll have the grandest wedding there is.”
With Chris’s promise, Serena felt a bit of relief wash over her, though the unease still

gnawed at her. Back when she made deals with those small–time thugs, she’d been careful–always using cash for offline transactions. No one could ever trace it back to
her.
She had been the victim, and she just had to stick with that.
Serena clung to Chris’s arm and smiled, trying to ease her own anxiety. “I was overthinking it. As long as you’re by my side, I’m not afraid of anything.”
As they arrived outside the hotel to greet the guests, Chris spotted Tyler and was about to say something when his gaze froze as he saw Eleanor standing beside him.
“Tyler, what’s Eleanor doing with you?” Chris asked, trying to keep his tone polite in front of Tyler.
“She insisted on coming with me, so I brought her along,” Tyler replied with a shrug. She said it was her idea to break off the engagement, so I’m still giving you your 1% shares as promised.”
Chris didn’t feel particularly grateful. He glared at Eleanor. “You think this is going to make me grateful? What’s with the red dress? Are you trying to steal the spotlight today?”
“What I wear is none of your business,” Eleanor shot back with a smirk. “Should I show up in mourning clothes for your benefit? Get a grip. Come on, Mr. Langford, let’s go.”
Tyler raised an eyebrow and lowered his voice. “Why do you keep calling me ‘Mr. Langford“?”
Eleanor responded with a teasing smile, “Our relationship hasn’t gone public yet. If I call you by name, people will start lecturing us.”
Chris stared at Eleanor, his thoughts racing. He thought she was trying to get Tyler involved, to pressure him into making him reconsider. But then, he overheard Keith’s voice. “Mr. Chris, don’t misunderstand Miss Donovan,” said Keith. “She’s been all over Mr. Langford lately, and it’s really bothering him. He doesn’t know how to shake her off.”
“She’s been clinging to my Tyler?! Chris muttered under his breath, a theory forming in his mind, only to quickly dismiss it.
To confirm his suspicions, Chris asked, “Keith, has Tyler really gotten married?”
“You don’t know? You’re family. How would I, an outsider, know?” Keith seemed surprised. “By the way, Mr. Langford has prepared a very generous gift for you two, and he hopes your wedding goes smoothly.”
“Ah, I see.” Chris finally understood. Eleanor must have regretted breaking up with him, so she’d latched onto Tyler. Tyler, fed up with her, probably just wanted him and Serena to get married without any further drama.
Overhearing Keith’s words, Tyler turned and shot a glance at the relieved Chris before letting out a cold grin. He did want the wedding to go smoothly, but that was only so certain people wouldn’t regret his choices and later try to take what wasn’t theirs.

“Eleanor, you really came,” came a weak voice.
