Chapter 26 A Fine Daughter In Law
Chapter 26 A Fine Daughter–In–Law
Seeing the shock on Madam Langford’s face, Tyler reached out and grabbed Eleanor, who had been trying to slip away. “Eleanor proposed to me, and I said yes,” he repeated. “Mom, do you have a problem with that?”
Eleanor felt a headache coming on. She hid behind Tyler and whispered, “Are you sure this is okay? Aren’t you afraid of giving Grandma a heart attack?”
“You should start calling her by her first name,” Tyler said. “Don’t worry. My mom likes
you.”
Eleanor shook her head. Tyler never followed the rules, and he had completely derailed her plans. Now she had no idea how to face Madam Langford.
Madam Langford only stayed stunned for a moment before regaining her composure.” Tyler, it was really Eleanor’s idea? You didn’t force her or anything?”
Tyler met Madam Langford’s gaze. No one knew him better than his own mother. If it wasn’t something he wanted to do, no one could force him.
“Yes,” Tyler said. “I owe her one last thing.”
Madam Langford stared at him. His face was calm and steady, giving away nothing. Still pretending, huh? she thought. She would never have guessed Tyler was into Eleanor. He hid it well–too well.
Now wasn’t the time to call him out on it. After a pause, she said slowly, “Very well. You‘ re not getting any younger–it’s time you settled down. Since you’ve found the right person, fine, pick a date and make it official. As for the rest of the family, don’t worry. In this house, your father listens to me.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Tyler said. “In my opinion, why not announce it today? One more happy occasion to celebrate.”
Madam Langford nodded. “That works for me.”
Eleanor was stunned listening to their conversation. Just like that, it was agreed upon, so easily.
“Oh dear, I didn’t even get a sip of that tea earlier. Eleanor, pour me another cup,” Madam Langford said with a smile. “You’ll make a fine daughter–in–law.”
Eleanor turned a questioning gaze to Tyler. She had heard the rumors–Tyler had no interest in women. He was at the age to marry but never spoke a word about it, worrying his parents endlessly.
Now it all made sense. Any woman willing to marry him would do. She had once been engaged to Chris, destined to be the Langford family’s granddaughter–in–law, and now, just like that, she was becoming a daughter–in–law instead. Most families wouldn’t accept such a change without protest–it would be too embarrassing. But Madam Langford? She agreed without hesitation.

“Grandma… you’re not… embarrassed by this?” Eleanor asked.
“Still the best tea when it’s brewed by you. Same tea leaves, same method–some people just waste good things,” Madam Langford took a sip of tea. “Embarrassed? Why would I be? As long as Tyler is fine with it, that’s all that matters. You’re the ones. living this life. If you two can make it work, that’s all I care about. I only have one concern—when can I expect a grandchild? Grandson, granddaughter, I’m not picky.”
Eleanor was caught off guard. She had mentally prepared herself before making the decision, but hearing it brought up so bluntly still made her blush. But Tyler… with that. body… She had heard he was disciplined and worked out regularly. He probably had eight–pack abs under there….
“We’ll let nature take its course,” Tyler said calmly. “Mom, don’t put too much pressure on Eleanor. The doctor said stress can affect fertility.”
Eleanor raised a hand to her lips and coughed lightly to cover her embarrassment. She was still a virgin. She and Chris had barely held hands, always keeping a respectful distance.
“Yes, let nature take its course,” Madam Langford echoed. “Eleanor, I’d like a word alone with Tyler.”
Eleanor nodded. “I understand. I’ll wait outside.”
Once Eleanor left the room, Madam Langford’s smile vanished. She fixed her gaze on Tyler. “Tell me. How long have you had your eye on her?”
Tyler smiled faintly. “You really do know me.”
“If you didn’t like her, even with a knife to your neck, you wouldn’t agree. Don’t think I don’t know you,” Madam Langford said. “But Eleanor… she still thinks you were forced. When do you plan on telling her?”
“No rush. Telling her out of the blue might scare her,” Tyler said. “I’ll wait until we’ve built a connection.”
“That’s wise,” Madam Langford agreed. “What if Eleanor had really married Chris?”
“She wouldn’t have,” Tyler said coolly. “I didn’t need to do anything. Chris’s arrogance guaranteed he’d never win her, All I had to do was wait.”
“Got it. So everything is under control,” Madam Langford said.
Tyler didn’t respond.
Outside, Eleanor stood there, itching with curiosity about what the two were
discussing. She wanted to eavesdrop but decided against it–it was clear they didn’t want her to hear.
Footsteps approached. She looked up–it was Kara.
With the ceremony about to start and Madam Langford still not seated, Kara was getting impatient and had come to look for her.

“What are you doing here?” Kara snapped when she saw Eleanor.
Eleanor didn’t like Kara. Whenever they’d met before, Kara had always put on the air of a superior elder, giving her attitude. Out of respect for Chris, Eleanor had tolerated it.
“I came with Tyler. He and Grandma are talking inside. Do you need something? I suggest you wait out here for now,” answered Eleanor.
To Kara, it sounded like Eleanor was giving her orders. “You’re not part of the Langford family anymore. Why are you calling him Tyler?” she doubted.
“Oh, right,” Eleanor smiled. “Then I’ll just call him by his full name–Tyler Langford. And you’re no longer my mother–in–law either. Isn’t that nice?”
“What do you mean by that?” Kara glared at her.
“Exactly what I said,” Eleanor replied. “Actually, I kind of pity you. But I shouldn’t say too. much. I’d hate to ruin someone else’s love life.”
Kara’s expression changed. “What do you mean by that? Say it clearly!“.
“What’s all this yelling?” The door opened, and Madam Langford stepped out. “Eleanor will soon be your sister–in–law. Stop treating her like your daughter–in–law.”
Kara froze, speechless. After a long moment, her trembling hand pointed at Eleanor.” Martha, what did you just say?”
Madam Langford glanced at Kara, puzzled. “Why are you so worked up? Shouldn’t you be happy for Tyler?”
ப
“But she was engaged to Chris!” Kara almost felt dizzy. “If word gets out, what happens to our family’s reputation?”
“I’m an old lady, and I don’t care,” Madám Langford said. “Why do you? Besides, they were just dating. Even if she had been married before, as long as Tyler likes her, that’s all that matters. Right, Tyler?”
