Chapter 72 Utterly Useless
Chris had been asked what could he change by dwelling on the past? Yet, a sliver of resentment lingered within him.
“Mom, I don’t want to change anything, Chris mumbled. “I just want to understand some things from back then.”
“And then what?” Kara demanded, poking Chris’s forehead. “If you find out you were wrong, what are you going to do? Try to steal her back from your uncle? Do you really think you can stand up to Tyler? Besides, look at how Eleanor treats you now. Is there any going back?”
Chris lowered his eyes, “1-”
“Alright,” Kara interrupted. “If you really want to do something, now isn’t the time. You’re no match for your uncle right now. Wait until you have the power to challenge him. It won’t be too late then.”
Chris felt agitated and missed the hidden meaning in Kara’s words. “Mom, I wasn’t wrong, was 17” Chris said quietly* Besides, she was the one who wanted to break up.”
“Of course you weren’t wrong.” Kara said soothingly. “You’re my son. How could you make a mistake? Even if you did, it must have been someone else’s fault.”
“I made the right choice. Serena was always living under their roof, the Donovans never truly treated her as their own of gave her the same opportunities. Being a good person is what matters most, Chris murmured, his frown easing slightly. Seeing Chris like this, Kara suddenly asked, “In the seven years you were dating Eleanor, did you two ever sleep together?” Chris shook his head. “No. If it wasn’t for Grandpa, I wouldn’t have dated her. Just looking at her annoyed me. Even holding her hand felt disgusting. Why would I sleep with her?”
“What about Serena?” Kara asked.
“With Serena… we couldn’t help ourselves,” Chris said, a slight smile playing on his lips. “She’s kinder, more innocent, and more considerate than Eleanor.”
Even though Chris was her son, Kara couldn’t help but roll her eyes inwardly. She could see Serena wasn’t as innocent as she seemed, but her son was blind to it.
Fortunately, since marrying into the family, Serena had only been causing trouble with Eleanor and hadn’t crossed their branch of the family. Otherwise, Kara wouldn’t have let her off so easily.
“Since you think Serena is so good, then stop thinking about other things,” Kara said firmly. “You need to believe you made the right choice.”
Watching Chris walk towards his room with a gloomy expression, Kara felt a surge of displeasure. Back in her own room, seeing Caden asleep in bed ignited her anger. She grabbed a nearby notebook and threw it at him.
The notebook hit Caden squarely on the forehead, jolting him awake.
Caden sat up, rubbing his sore forehead and glaring at Kara. “What the hell was that for?”
“Why did I marry such a useless coward!” Kara spat. “You’re the older son, but now your younger brother calls all the shots! Even our son’s fiancée ended up with him.”
“Mom and Dad always favored him, you know that,” Caden retorted. “And Eleanor? What’s that got to do with me? It’s our son who couldn’t hold onto her.”
“It’s because you’re incompetent,” Kara snapped. “If you had succeeded back then, none of this would be happening now. You couldn’t even handle killing someone. Useless!”
“Keep your voice down!” Caden hissed, eyes darting around. “What if someone hears you?”
Kara scoffed. “Spineless fool. If Tyler were gone, wouldn’t everything be yours?”
“Do you think arranging an ‘accident‘ is that easy?” Caden countered. “He was damn lucky that time. If Eleanor hadn’t stuck her nose where it didn’t belong, we would have succeeded.”
much more than that Serena. Your son really is an idiot. Seven years and he never touched Eleanor. Otherwise, we could at least mock Tyler for taking his nephew’s left “We still can,” Caden suggested. “How hard is it to spin a story?”
“That’s why I can’t stand her,” Kara said. “Although, she had her uses
Kara looked at Caden, exasperated. “Are you stupid? Everyone knows our Chris dumped Eleanor for Serena, and Eleanor married Tyler out of spite. How are you going t

ving our son devastated. Serena comes along at just the right moment, so Chris marries her. It’s perfect. I’ll leak it to the press.”
“Stop right there!” Kara blocked Caden’s path. “I swear, our son gets his stupidity from you. What good will that do?”
“It’ll ruin Tyler’s reputation,” Caden insisted.

“You moron!” Kara fumed. “As soon as they deny it, all the blame will fall on Chris. Are you trying to destroy our son? “You’re being short–sighted!” Caden shot back. “Who can really say what happened? It’ll be his word against ours. He wants a big wedding, wants to show off? I’ll make him a laughingstock. Right, I won’t do it now. I’ll have reporters ask him at the wedding. That’ll definitely drag his name through the mud. When the company stock price drops, I can make my move against him.”
Kara frowned. “I’m telling you, save your breath. Tricks like that won’t work on Tyler.”
Caden dismissed her concerns. “How do we know if we don’t try? Look, don’t word about it. I’ll handle everything”
Seeing Caden’s confident expression, Kara just scoffed and ignored him, heading out to the garden for some fresh air
Kara walked into the garden gazebo and saw Eleanor sitting there.
Eleanor wore a pale green summer dress. She looked graceful and elegant – honestly, too good for Tyler, Kara thought. “Well, fancy seeing you here, Eleanor,” Kara said, approaching her. “What are you looking at? The water lilies? They’re not blooming anymore.”
The flowering season was over, leaving the pond covered in green lily pads.
“Oh, Kara,” Eleanor turned, holding up a seed pod. “Were you coming to pick some pods too? They’re quite sweet.” Only then did Kara notice Eleanor holding one seed pod and several others placed beside her.
“You actually picked the seed pods?” Kara asked, a hint of satisfaction in her voice. “Don’t you know? Mom adores these water lilies. She doesn’t let anyone touch them.”
“It’s a waste not to eat them,” Eleanor replied. “Besides, there are no flowers left. She said not to damage the flowers, but she never said anything about not eating the fruit.”
Kara changed the subject abruptly. “Eleanor, let me ask you something. If Chris regretted his decision, would you be willing to get back together with him?”
Eleanor peeled the outer layer off a seed from the pod in her hand. Hearing Kara’s question, she popped the seed into her mouth. “Kara, what nonsense are you talking about?”
