Chapter 86 Completely Different Attitudes
“I did not.” Serena shouted. “I’m a victim here too. I was just a kid back then, trying to survive. I didn’t have a choice.
“Besides, I heard Richard still hasn’t been found. You all should be the ones worried. You took everything from him–he’s not just going to let that slide.”
Eleanor stared straight at Serena. “Are you still in touch with him?”
“Of course not,” Serena said. “I’m not stupid–no one flaunts being the other woman. Like I said, I had no choice back then. I was forced into it. Now, Chris is the only one I love.
“Eleanor, please go talk to him. He keeps going like this, it’s breaking my heart. Even Kara can’t talk him out of it.”
“Well, if he wants to stand there, then let him,” Eleanor replied. “Tyler, I heard the WeRoll Bistro just launched a new barbecue set. Suddenly, I’m craving some. I wonder how five–star bistro barbecue stacks up against the stuff from those little hole–in–the–wall places.”
Tyler gave her a soft, doting look. “If you want to go, let’s go right now.”
“No way.” Serena stepped forward, blocking Eleanor. “Are you really just going to let Chris keep standing there?”
“Then why don’t you do that for him?” Eleanor looked Serena up and down. “He only got into this mess because of you. It was bad enough you ran your mouth, but then you went online and started spreading rumors. That’s something I can’t just let slide.”
“That superfan of Lila’s has always cared about her, and they’re really close. So what if Lila confides in them when she’s upset? Eleanor, you should just apologize publicly,” said Serena.
Eleanor laughed. “Funny, I never even said what this was about, but you guessed it right away. Serena, are you psychic or something?”
Serena’s face darkened, and she mumbled, “I–I just happened to see it in the news.”
“Oh, really?” Eleanor chuckled. “What a coincidence. I just met with Lila, and honestly, we hit it off right away. A few more times and we’ll probably be best friends.”
Serena stared at Eleanor in shock, completely in disbelief. She thought, ‘I planned every word before going to see Lila. Knowing how into Angust she is, there’s no way she’d tolerate Eleanor being around.’
“Lila really is a sweetheart. I guess it’s because Angust likes you, Eleanor, so she wants to get on your good side,” Serena said, lowering her eyes. “I could never do that. I can’t just cozy up to someone just because Chris likes them.”
Eleanor covered her mouth, laughing. “I’ve never seen a mistress act so shamelessly. Some people really are unstoppable once they lose all sense of shame.”
”
“Eleanor, you can’t say that about Serena whispered. “Look at your own past–besides Tyler, you’ve been involved with three other men. Didn’t you lose your virginity to some guy in a hotel? If Linda ever found out about your wild ways, she’d be heartbroken.”
“Funny thing is, back then I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, so I let those people off the hook. But now, I think it’s time to hold them accountable.
“If they dared to drug and hurt people before, who knows what they’re capable of now? I wonder how hard it’ll be to track them down and make sure they pay for what they did,” Eleanor said, tilting her head. “What do you think, Tyler?”
. “You have a point there,” Tyler replied. “Finding those people won’t be hard.”
Serena looked at Tyler, more stunned than ever. She thought, ‘When I casually let this slip to Chris, he was shocked- disgusted even. But Tyler? He didn’t even blink. Just… didn’t care at all.‘
Eleanor slipped her arm through Tyler’s. “Didn’t we say we were going out for barbecue? Let’s go.”
“Alright.” Eleanor nodded.
Serena watched as Eleanor and Tyler were about to leave, panic rising in her chest. Chris was still standing there, and Kara had already slapped her and yelled at her for that.
If she let them walk out now, who knew when they’d be back–or what Kara might do to her in the meantime. “Tyler, Eleanor, Chris is still standing there,” Serena blurted out anxiously. “He won’t dare sit down unless you say so.”
Eleanor looked at her, surprised. “Are you deaf” place.”

“Tyler, Chris is a Langford. How can you side with an outsider and let him get bullied?” Serena turned to Tyler. “Outsider?” Tyler let out a cold laugh. “She’s my wife. My person. Of course I’m going to stand by her.”
“Tyler, I just don’t think it’s worth it for you,” Serena said quietly. “What if Eleanor’s secrets get out? What then?”

“Do you have any proof?” Tyler shot back. “For the record, I have plenty of evidence about what you did. If you want to stir up drama online, you’re not even close to being a match.”
“Tyler, I just feel bad for Chris,” Serena muttered.
Eleanor chimed in, “Tyler, since Serena is so worried, why don’t we all go take a look?”
At the doorway, Chris was still standing there ramrod straight, completely ignoring Kara’s scolding. “Chris, I told you to take a break–did you not hear me?
“They made you stand here to reflect and you actually did it? You just go along with anything, don’t you? I’m saying it one more time. Go rest. Now.”
Eleanor’s laughter drifted over. “Such an obedient nephew.”
Kara wanted to snap back, but seeing Tyler’s icy expression, she hesitated and didn’t dare say anything more. Chris looked at Eleanor. “I’ve done what you asked. Can you forgive Serena now?”
Eleanor smiled. “Forgive her? Not a chance. She never learns she apologizes and then immediately forgets what she did wrong. So here’s the deal–if she cuts ties with Lila’s little superfan and gives me a real apology, I might consider it.”
Tears welled up in Serena’s eyes. She hurried over to Chris. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have let Chris take the blame for me. “But I won’t admit to something I didn’t do. Eleanor, you were the one who got too close to Angust, that’s why there was a misunderstanding.”
Kara’s heart ached for Chris. “Tyler, he’s just a kid. What’s the point of holding this over him?”
“He stirs up trouble even at home. You really think he’ll behave out there?” Tyler said coldly. “One simple sorry, and he’s free to go rest.”
Chris glared at Eleanor, clearly annoyed, and muttered, “Eleanor, I’m sorry.”
Eleanor nodded. “Try using your brain next time. Oh, by the way, Serena just mentioned you knew what happened to me in college. Did you and Serena completely turn your backs on me after that?”
Chris glanced at Serena. Back then, Serena insisted Eleanor was innocent–Eleanor’d only been drugged because she was trying to help someone.
‘So why did Serena bring it up in front of Eleanor now? Didn’t she tell me not to even mention it in front of Eleanor?‘ Chris thought.
Serena looked away, guilt flickering across her face.
“You might’ve been innocent. But it still stuck with me,” Chris said. He’d still had some feelings for Eleanor back then, and didn’t want to dig up painful memories.
Plus, she was the granddaughter–in–law Arthur and Martha had chosen. If he wanted that inheritance, he had to swallow it. Kara frowned. “What are you guys talking about? Why all the cryptic talk?”
“It’s nothing,” Chris said, pulling Serena away. “We’ve apologized, so we’re leaving.”
As he passed Eleanor, Chris whispered so only she could hear, “That thing that happened to you when we were together- the drugging? I’ll keep it quiet. But you’d better stop causing trouble for Serena.”
