Chapter 11
My parents were furious and heartbroken when they saw me.
But out of consideration for my feelings, they didn’t mention it. Mom hugged me, tears streaming down her face. “It’s good you’re back. That’s all that matters.”
Dad stood protectively beside us, his eyes reddened. “From now on, no one will ever hurt my precious daughter again.”
I embraced them tearfully, grateful to have a safe harbor to return to when I was battered and bruised.
A month later, my left eye regained sight, my hands gradually recovered, and Harrison and I held a magnificent wedding.
But unexpectedly, as we were exchanging rings, Ethan burst in.
“Sophia, I knew you weren’t dead! How could you leave me when you love me so much? I’ve come to take you home.”
“Let’s have our wedding right away. From now on, I’ll be good to only you.”
Looking at his outstretched hand, so sure of himself, I laughed scornfully.
“I’m not going with you, and I certainly won’t marry you.”
The smile on Ethan’s face froze momentarily, but he quickly recovered. “Are you still angry? Don’t worry, I’ve cut Vivian’s tendons and thrown her into a special club. Anyone who hurt you, I won’t spare!”
“What about you?” I looked at him, my gaze cold. “You, who hurt me the deepest–what punishment have you received?”
Panic flashed across Ethan’s face.
I smiled sarcastically. “If you had any shred of respect for our past, you wouldn’t appear before me again, ruining my happiness, arrogantly thinking a simple ‘sorry‘ would make me follow you.”
“Ethan, I’m not that despicable. Every wound Vivian inflicted on me was with a knife you handed her. From the day you cut my tendons, we ceased to have any relationship.”
“Leave. Don’t make me feel that loving you was something disgusting.”
Ethan’s face drained of color. He trembled, ultimately unable to say a word.

Later, security guards came and dragged him out.
He stood at the doorway, watching me exchange rings with another man, making our vows.
The final kiss sealed our lifelong commitment.
All those beautiful moments should have been his, but he destroyed them with his own hands.
He clutched his chest, curling up in agony. As he collapsed to the ground, he stared at the ceiling, laughing through his tears.
“Ethan, you deserved this.”
Three years later, Harrison and I returned to attend a friend’s wedding.
At the reception, I overheard people mentioning Ethan.
“That once cold and noble medical examiner, after a car accident, became permanently paralyzed. I heard his legs were amputated. He can’t even control his bodily functions now.”
“How did the accident happen?”
“What else? That adopted daughter he doted on like his eyeball–for some reason, he sent her to a special club. Later, she escaped and hid in his car. When he got in, she smashed a bottle over his head. They fought over the steering wheel and crashed. She died instantly. They say it was gruesome–she flew through the windshield…”
Harrison gently covered my ears.
I leaned into his embrace, removing his hands to intertwine our fingers.
Those distant people and events had long been cast from my mind.
Bringing them up now was like passing clouds, unable to stir even a ripple in my heart.
My happiness was firmly in my grasp.
