Chapter 3
My mother sighed softly on the other end. “My dear child, I always thought that cold–hearted boy of Pierce family wasn’t right for you. I’m glad you’ve come to your senses.”
“I know, Mom. When I come back to Harbor City, I won’t be returning here. Give me a month to wrap things up, and I’ll be home.”
“I’ll meet you at the airport.”
“See you in a month.”
“See who?” The door opened, and Ethan walked in with a thermos, a flash of anxiety crossing his face.
I replied calmly, “The awards ceremony a month from now. A friend is coming to help me celebrate.”
At the mention of this, Ethan seemed to remember I was an actress and how important my face was to my career.
His face showed a rare glimpse of remorse.
“Vivian is young and impulsive. She accidentally hurt your face and was so scared that she cried. She’s already been punished enough. Don’t hold a grudge.”
I stared at him, speechless, then laughed bitterly. “She destroyed my face, then cried from fear, and call that punishment? Ethan, what exactly am I to you?”
you
His brow furrowed, looking at me like I was being unreasonable. “I started dating you with marriage in mind. I see you as my future wife. But as an adult, I didn’t expect you to be so petty about a small mistake from Vivian. With such a narrow mind, how can you be her aunt? You should really reflect on yourself.”
With that, he walked out without looking back.
I gazed blankly at the ceiling, suddenly found it all quite absurd.
If he truly wanted to marry me, why had he rejected my 99 proposals?
He was simply using me as a shield, terrified that his precious niece might face the slightest social judgment.
Yet it had taken me until now to see this simple truth.
Over the next month, doctors used the best equipment and medicine available, and my face finally healed.

During that month, Ethan never once visited the hospital.
He left me with just one message: “Vivian is upset because of you. I need to take her away to cheer her up. Don’t contact me during this time. Think about what you’ve done wrong. Once Vivian feels better, you can properly apologize to her.”
I froze. Did he really think I would blindly follow his every word?
