Chapter 49
Since Isabella was mostly fine, she likely wouldn’t need to stay the night here.
The porridge was still simmering in the pot. Adele sat for a while before heading downstairs. Aunt Sara was in the kitchen, saying,
“I keep an eye on the fire. Madam, you must be tired, so please sit down and rest.”
When Adele left the kitchen, she saw Tranklin sitting on the living room sofa reading the newspaper.
When he saw her, he glanced over, but quickly returned his attention to the paper.
Adele hesitated for a moment.
In the past, she would have sat down next to him, trying to spend some quiet time together without disturbing him.
But now…
They had nothing left to talk about.
With that thought, she turned and headed upstairs, and Franklin didn’t call after her.
However, Adele couldn’t help feeling a bit puzzled.
She had expected him to confront her about “bullying” Julia with Johnny, but he didn’t say anything at all…
Adele had just gone upstairs when Isabella woke up, looking pale and coming out of her room to find her. “Mommy, I’m hungry, is the porridge ready?”
“Almost done.” Adele asked Aunt Sara, “Is it still cooking?”
Aunt Sara smiled, “No, it’s done.”
Adele felt relieved and went back into the kitchen. After five or six minutes, she popped her head out and said to Isabella, “Bella, the porridge is
ready.”
Adele served the porridge and was about to leave when she noticed that Franklin had followed her over.
Isabella looked at the single bowl of porridge and asked, “Mommy, why is there only one bowl? Shouldn’t Daddy eat too?”
Adele hadn’t expected that Franklin would want some as well. Before she could speak, Aunt Sara smiled and said, “I’ll get another bowl.”
Adele wasn’t planning to eat, but it was her habit to make extra. Isabella didn’t eat much, so if both she and Franklin had some, it would be enough.
She served the porridge, then quietly sat down to eat.
Franklin had already taken off his watch and was elegantly stirring his porridge with a spoon, his movements graceful and pleasing to the eye.
Isabella took a sip and smiled, her eyes squinting with satisfaction. “I haven’t had this in so long, it’s so delicious.”
Aunt Sara smiled, “Now that you’re back in the country, you can have it whenever you want.”
“Mmm!”
Isabella listened, her thoughts briefly interrupted, but she didn’t say anything.
Franklin sat opposite her, and he didn’t speak either.
Isabella, however, was very happy. She seemed to think of something and leaned over to Adele, her voice sweet, “Mommy, can you sleep with me tonight?”
Adele was about to refuse, but when she saw how pale Isabella still looked, she agreed. “Okay.”
Isabella only had one bowl, and Franklin didn’t eat much either. The porridge in the pot wasn’t finished when they left the dining room.
