Chapter 6
They pulled him out of the water, of course.
When he woke up in the hospital he saw was Carmilla sobbing at his bedside.
His eyes looked dead -just empty, thousand yard stare.
“Why the fuck did you save me?” His voice was raspy. “Should’ve let me drown with her.”
Carmilla’s head snapped up. She pounded her fists on his chest.
“How could you? You promised me six months! Think about me!”
“Elliot–if you’d died, I would’ve swallowed EVERY pill in this hospital.I promise!”
Something flickered in his vacant eyes. He actually looked at Carmilla for the first time since waking up,
He knew Carmilla still loved him. She’d been obsessed with him since sophomore year of college, the days he fell in love with Briar,
Carmilla had come to State on some cultural exchange program. When her vísa expired, she found ways to stay–all because of him.
Even though he treated her like strange. Even though Briar never even knew she existed.
The woman was pathologically persistent! After graduation, she even landed a job at Sterling Industries.
Last year, she finally lost it. Walked into his corner office after hours, started unbuttoning her blouse, and told him“I know you love Briar. I’m not asking for a ring. Not asking for dates or anniversaries.” Her blouse fell open. No bra. “She’ll never know about us,”
“Please, just give me a chance to stay by your side. Elliot. Anything. Please.”
That night, he lost control at the first time. And for the first time, he got a taste of the wild, uninhibited sex from other woman.
Elliot thought he’d figured out the perfect setup–devoted fiancé at home, wild affair on the side.
Then, a month before our wedding, Carmillahas cancer. Six months if she was lucky.
She begged him to be with her until the end.
Enter the fake death plan.
Seeing that same desperate look on her face now–the same one from that first night in his office–something in him gave.
“Baby,stop talking nonsense.” he muttered.
At his response, Carmilla couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst into tears.
He was eager to be discharged when the moment he woke up. His assistant couldn’t stop him so drove him to their villa.
The second he walked into my bedroom, he saw our picture. He finally broke down.
The guilt was eating him alive.
While I was plummeting into the Atlantic, he’d been tangled in sheets with Carmilla, her legs wrapped around him. The guilt made him want to open a
vein.
Briar’d always been terrified of water–couldn’t even bath Soak. And pregnant, too. The terror she must have felt in those final moments…
Thinking about he coudn’t breath anymore.
He stared at our bed I’d carefully selected, even the sheet and pillows had been meticulously chosen by me.Every corner of this house bore my effort.
Something in him snapped. He tore the comforter off the bed, hurled pillows against the wall.

Chapter 6
“I’m a piece of shit! Tucking garbage! I should be dead, not her!”
His assistant tried to grab him.
“Sir, Briar planned this–she chose that plane on purpose…”
During the struggle, my nightstand crashed over. A sealed envelope skidded across the floor.
Elliot froze, a sick feeling washing over him.
He dropped to his knees and crawled toward it.With shaking hands, he ripped open the envelope. Each word hit him.
The note was short, but the last line gutted him:
“I can’t wait anymore, Elliot.Don’t worry about us–the baby and I are coming to be with you now.”
