Hearing the assistant’s words, Carmilla started trembling
Elliot turned to her, his face pure rage. “How dare you?”
No point denying what was right there in fact Carmilla hit her knees, clinging to his legs.
“Baby, listen–I was desperate, okay? I love you so much but then I was losing you,” she sobbed. “Once you put that ring on her finger, I would have no chance.”
“I know you love her, but goddammit, I love you too! 1 panicked… I never meant for her to die! I never wanted your kid gone. Please, Elliot…
He kicked her away like garbage.
“Bullshit! You send her our sex tape and expect me to believe you didn’t want to hurt her? You fake stage four cancer?”
“You did all this to replace her. Well, congrats–it worked. Now you’re scared? How scared was Briar when that plane was going down?”
Carmilla just shook her head, blubbering incoherently.
Elliot glanced at his assistant. “Call them now!”
Carmilla’s eyes went wide. She started smashing her forehead against the floor in panic, drawing blood.
Minutes later, three guys in black suits walked in.
Carmilla scrambled backward. “Gosh, Elliot! You can’t do this! I didn’t kill her! Don’t do this to me!No!”
Elliot’s face was stone. “Basement.Don’t let her die immediately. Understand?”
She shrieked as they dragged her away, but Elliot didn’t even blink.
“You psycho bastard!” she screamed. “Where was all this loyalty when you dick deep in me? When you were planning your little death stunt? Briar knew everything before she killed your baby! She was never going to forgive you!”
“She killed herself to make you suffer! Your lies killed her! YOUR LIES!”
When she was gone, the room felt vacuum–sealed.
Elliot stood there frozen, staring at that abortion form.
Then he started laughing–a broken, manic sound.
“Holy shit. She’s right. Briar knew… She did this on purpose…”
“Which means she’s alive. She’s gotta be alive!”
Briar was too proud. Even crushed by his “death,” once she knew the truth, she wouldn’t off herself over some cheating prick.
He knew.her like he knew himself–and she knew exactly how to destroy him. She’d turned his own trick against him.
Terminated the pregnancy, left a fake suicide note, and staged a plane crash.
His head snapped up. “Get me on the next flight to wherever the fuck her brother lives. NOW.”
Meanwhile, I was completely oblivious to the shit show back home. Conor and I were debating between Thai and Italian for tomorrow night.
Since learning what happened, my brother had taken indefinite leave to keep me company. Each day was just: eat, swimming, repeat.
Then came the knock.
I opened the door and there he was–on his knees.

Chapter 8
“Baby, I’m here to take you home.”
Before I could blink, Conor’s fist smashed into Elliot’s jaw.
You fucking asshole! You came here after what you did? After all your promises? THIS is how you treat my sister?”
Elliot just took it. Each punch. No defense. Just
“I deserve this. I’m scary.”
“Conor, please… let me talk to her. Just one minute.”
That just earned him another punch.
“Asshole. Don’t use my name!”
I grabbed Conor’s arm mid–swing. Elliot’s face was a bloody mess.
“Just go. Nothing to say.”
The second Conor stopped, Elliot straightened, still on his knees.
“Not happening. I came for my wife.Please,Briar.”
Conor nearly lunged again, but I held him back and looked down at Elliot.
“Listen we never actually got married. You faked your death before the ceremony, remember? No paperwork. Legally, I’m single.”
Elliot didn’t budge an inch.
I sighed, tears betraying me.
“Remember what I said the day I agreed to be your girlfriend?”
