Chapter 83
Shawn lay flat on the bed. letting Zoe rest pushed her away firmly
against his chest. Her face inched closer and closer, and just as her lips were about to meet his, Shawn
Unfazed, Zoe clung to him like a stubborn koala, wrapping her arms and legs around him. She refused to let go.
“Let go,” Shawn commanded coldly. But instead of obeying, her shoulders began to tremble.
Frowning. Shawn tried to pull her off, only to realize his shirt felt damp.
He grabbed her shoulders and moved her back slightly, finally noticing the tears on her face.
Her tears fell silently, each drop making Shawn’s heart ache faintly.
Zoe cried without a sound, yet her quiet sobs gripped Shawn’s heart so tightly that he couldn’t bring himself to push her away anymore.
Of course, it was all an act. Zoe hadn’t shed real tears since becoming a mercenary; everything now was just part of her performance.
“Why are you crying?” Shawn asked.
Zoe whimpered, her sobs growing louder as she stammered, “S–Someone’s trying to hurt me… I’m so scared”
Shawn didn’t need her to explain, he had already noticed something was off with the chandelier
This was his territory. For every major event, the staff conducted thorough safety checks.
Those chandeliers had been inspected. There was no way they would suddenly break and fall. The fall wasn’t an accident–it was deliberate.
When Shawn saw Zoe trembling in fear, looking so pitiful, a flash of cold fury crossed his eyes. Someone dared to harm her under my protection! They must have a death wish, he said to himself
“Mr. Ludwig, who do you think is trying to hurt me? Will they come back to kill me?” Zoe asked, clutching his sleeve tightly.
Shawn placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry. It’s very safe here. No one can get in
“Really?” Zor’s voice was filled with doubt
Shawn explained, “With me here, no one can hurt you”
“Shawn, you’re so good to me: Zoe said, deliberately switching to his TUTIC
Shawn had intended to remind her about the boundaries between them, but when he saw her tear–streaked face, all the words of reproach died in
his throat.
Zoe cried for a while longer, but when she sensed Shawn’s patience wearing thin, she finally stopped
Shawn let out a sigh of relief. Seeing that Zoe had stopped crying, be prepared to leave.
“Mr. Ludwig, I’m covered in blood, and it’s so uncomfortable. Can you help me take a bath?” Zoe asked.
Shawn froze, his body stiffening as he instinctively shook off Zoe’s hand and took several steps back.
Zoe lowered her head, the corner of her mouth twitching slightly. “Is that reaction really necessary? It’s just a bath. I wouldn’t even mind if he looked, so why is he so nervous” she thought.
“Pretty please!” Zoe added, her tone turning sweet and coquettish.
But this time, her charm seemed to have no effect. Shawn’s face remained stern as he replied, “Na. Men and women should keep their distance. Il find a maid to help you
Shawn was unwavering when it came to matters of propriety. He refused to cross any lines.
Seçing his reluctance, Zoe deliberately began to whimper, “Mr. Ludwig, you just think I’m a burden, don’t you? Yeah, it’s true. Someone wants to kill me, and anyone who stays with me is bound to suffer. It’s only natural for you to keep your distance.
“Go ahead and find a maid. At least when the hitman comes, there’ll be one more person to die with me.”
Zoe’s self–deprecating words struck a nerve, leaving Shawn visibly annoyed. If what she said was true, he would be responsible for two lives. That was a burden he refused to carry.
