Benedict jumped in without hesitation, lifting Suzanna out of the water. He quickly shrugged off his coat and wrapped it around her.
Suzanna’s lips were turning purple from the cold, and she shivered in harms. “Benedict, your ex–wife wanted me to leave you, but I didn’t listen. Then, she actually pushed me in.”
The moment she said that, the crowd started whispering.
“What? She is Mr. Landon’s ex–wife? Why hasn’t he introduced her before?”
“That woman is crazy. If the pond was any deeper, Miss Mitchell could’ve drowned. That’s attempted murder!”
“No wonder Mr. Landon divorced her. Who would want to live with someone like that? She might end up killing him one day.”
The crowd was in a frenzy over the fact that Francesca was Benedict’s ex–wife. No one cared that Benedict was right there; they just kept gossiping about her.
Raymond, who had heard the commotion, rushed over and pushed through the crowd to stand in front of Francesca, shielding her from view.
The crowd’s excitement only grew. Something was definitely going on between the young man from the Denvers family and Benedict’s ex–wife.
Francesca reached out and gently pushed Raymond aside. She gave him a quick nod to show she was fine, then turned to face Benedict. A mocking smile played on her lips.
Just when everyone thought she was about to get into it with Benedict, Francesca suddenly said, “Suzanna, are you really that stupid?”
The words silenced the crowd. No one expected Francesca, the one who was supposedly in the wrong, to not only brush it off but also insult Suzanna.
People started frowning, clearly put off by her.
Most of them were from high society, and they felt someone like Francesca didn’t belong at an event like this. They much preferred someone more refined and well–mannered like Suzanna.
Suzanna was stunned for a second, caught off guard by the insult. She almost fired back right away, but then she realized something that made her smile inside.
She thought Francesca had finally lost her cool, showing her true, ugly side.
Go ahead, keep talking. The more you lash out, the worse you look. Then, Benedict will finally give up on you. Suzanna couldn’t help but feel a bit smug, but she kept up the act, still looking shocked and tearful.
Benedict, though, was clearly annoyed. His brows were furrowed, and he wasn’t happy with how things were going.
“Francesca! Apologize to Suzanna!” Benedict snapped, trying to put a stop to it.

Suzanna, sensing her moment, leaned into Benedict’s arms and whispered, “Benedict, don’t blame her. I might’ve teased her a little too much years ago. It was just a joke, though, and I can understand why she’d still be upset.”
She gave a small shrug, acting like it wasn’t a big deal. “It’s fine if she insults me or pushes me into the water. As long as she gets it out, I don’t mind.”
Of course, Suzanna completely ignored the fact that Francesca nearly lost her kidney because of her actions. To her, it was just a harmless prank.
Benedict, knowing what really happened, frowned but stayed quiet. He wasn’t about to drag family drama into this public scene.
Meanwhile, the people around them didn’t know what had really happened, and they were starting to judge Francesca.
They couldn’t understand why she was still so bitter about a harmless joke from years ago.
Those elites wondered how such a petty woman had ever been married to Benedict. Maybe he had been blind back then.
