At that moment, Shaun spoke up, his voice firm.
“Warren, don’t joke about things like that.”

Warren raised his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay, no more jokes. I’ll just focus on driving.”
The car fell silent. Shaun pulled out his phone and opened WhatsApp.
He wanted to send Halsey a message, but his fingers froze over the keyboard. He didn’t know what to say.
Halsey returned home.
Cyril had already been discharged from the hospital, and he sat in the living room with Patricia.
Seeing Halsey, he stood. “Why were you out so late?”
Halsey hurried over. “Please sit down, Dad. I went to see Mr. Payne today, and he said he’s not going to end our cooperation.” Patricia’s face lit up. “Really? That’s wonderful! You went to see Mr. Payne alone?”
Halsey answered, “No. I ran into Mr. Lane. He helped me.”
“Mr. Lane? You mean the new business star, Shaun Lane?”
Cyril had heard of Shaun’s name. The business world was small, and someone like Shaun–who had taken his company public in just three years–was rare. Most people had heard of him, one way or another.
Halsey nodded. “Yes, that’s him.”
Cyril looked puzzled. “But you didn’t know Mr. Lane before this. Why would he help you?”
Halsey didn’t want to hide the truth from her parents. “Actually… Shaun is Dwight.”
“What?”
Cyril froze.
Patricia’s eyes widened. “Dwight? Isn’t that the guy you dated three years ago?”
Back then, when Halsey and Dwight were dating, Patricia was overseas. She had rushed home after hearing Halsey was in a relationship, but Dwight disappeared, so Patricia never got to meet him.
Halsey nodded again. “Yes, that’s him.”

Halsey was silent for a moment before saying, “He has a girlfriend now.”
“What?” Patricia was stunned.
Halsey stood up. “I’m tired. I’m going upstairs to rest.”
“Sure,” Patricia said softly.
Halsey climbed the stairs and entered her room. She stepped into the bathroom to shower.
After shedding her coat, she stood before the mirror above the sink and saw the red marks on her neck, all left by Shaun.
Scenes of them tangled together in the shower flashed through her mind. Slowly, she pressed her back against the wall and slid down until she sat on the floor.
She still didn’t understand where she had gone wrong.
Three years ago, their relationship ended abruptly.
She had watched him marry someone else with her own eyes.
And three years later, without a single explanation, he had someone new.
