By now, they had searched through more than half of the Capital, but there wasn’t a single trace of the worker.
Suddenly, a thought struck Halsey. “I’ve got it!”
“Do you know where he is?” one of her aides asked eagerly.
With a burst of excitement, Halsey said, “We need to hurry to this one place–I’m pretty sure he’s hiding there.”
“Got it. Let’s go now.”
Halsey had been sitting down to catch her breath, but now she sprang to her feet, anxiety making her restless.
Just as she turned to leave, she twisted her ankle badly and stumbled, falling forward.
“Ah!” she cried, bracing for a hard impact with the ground.
But the pain she expected never came. Instead, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, steadying her and pulling her gently into a warm, broad embrace.
Looking up, Halsey found Shaun’s handsome face, partially hidden behind a mask.
Shaun was here.
He had just stepped out of his car when he saw her faltering and caught her just in time.
Halsey hadn’t expected him to show up. For a moment, her mind went blank before she quickly pushed herself upright. “What are you doing here?”
Shaun’s eyes held hers steadily. “Did you come to the company looking for me today?”
She forced a small smile. “Yeah.”
“Why?”
“I had to talk to you about something, but not anymore. I’m busy, so please excuse me.”
She started to pull away.
Shaun’s gaze hardened as he reached out and grabbed her slender arm firmly. “Where are you going?”
Halsey tried to yank her arm free. “It’s none of your business! Please let go. I have things to take care of.”
But Shaun didn’t release her. Instead, he pulled her closer, a teasing smile curling at the corners of his mouth. “You came looking for me at the company today. Now I’m here, but you won’t tell me what you want. Do you think this is a game?” Her clear eyes met his. “I shouldn’t have gone to your company. But don’t worry–I won’t do that again”
Shaun tilted his head. “Did Chelsea say something to you today?”
Hearing the name “Chelsea” made Halsey remember what Chelsea had said earlier.
A slight smile tugged at her lips. “She only said the truth,”
Shaun pressed, “What exactly did she say to you?”
Hálsey replied, “Nothing much. Just that I shouldn’t come looking for you anymore, and that she’s your girlfriend now. I really shouldn’t disturb you two. I don’t want her to misunderstand-”
Shaun yanked her closer again, cutting her off with an amused smile. “You want to know the truth about my relationship with Chelsea?”
Halsey blinked, surprised. “What do you mean?”
