“What did he want to talk to you about?”
“I… I wanted to ask about your face. Gilbert said he knew what happened. He told me if I met with him, he’d tell me.”
Shaun paused and looked at Halsey. “So you went to see him just to ask about my face?”
“Of course! What else did you think? That guy’s a total creep! He suddenly cut a piece of steak and tried to feed it to me, saying he’d only tell me if I ate it. I didn’t, obviously!“.
Seeing how much she disliked Gilbert made Shaun feel better. So that was what it was.

Shaun looked at her closely. “You really don’t know what happened to my face?“.
Halsey shook her head. “No. Why do you keep asking like I’m supposed to know? Am I supposed to?”
Shaun went quiet for a few seconds. It seemed like Halsey wasn’t involved back then after all. Which meant Gilbert must’ve been the one behind it.
“Can you tell me what actually happened to your face?”
“Three years ago, I got badly hurt when working with the police to catch the major drug lord. Even with the injuries, I tried to find you. But someone grabbed me, shoved me into a car, and threw acid on me. My face was destroyed. Then they drove the car off a cliff, with me still inside,” Shaun said. 1
“What?!”
Halsey gasped, her eyes wide with shock.
All that happened three years ago?
He was attacked with acid, and then he fell off a cliff?
She shook her head, stunned. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t know any of that happened to you.”
“It’s okay,” Shaun said. “It’s all in the past now.”

She leaned in close, heart aching for him.

Shaun felt like all the pain from those three years was melting away in her embrace.
Halsey gently touched his face. “Don’t worry. I’ve already contacted Wendy. I believe she can help fix your face.”
They had just pulled up outside the company building. Shaun parked the car and looked at her.
“As long as you completely cut ties with Gilbert, I’ll let go of everything that happened before. Okay?”
“I don’t really talk to Gilbert anymore, anyway,” Halsey said.
Really? But she had spent the past three years with him.
Just thinking about that filled Shaun with jealousy. He didn’t want to share her with anyone. He wanted her to be his and his alone.
“I really don’t like Gilbert. So don’t answer his calls. Don’t meet with him in private. Can you do that?” he said.

Halsey’s lashes fluttered, and then she smiled, lips curving softly. She leaned in and kissed him.
Shaun froze.
When he looked down, all he saw were her sparkling eyes. She grinned and said, “Listen to me. I’m very serious about you, too.”
Shaun’s heart completely melted. “Okay. I hope you’ll be good to me.”
Then, he leaned down and kissed her.
