Chapter 106
Chapter 106
When he came out, he was holding a kid’s crossbow, a simplified version with shorter arrows made for children.
He glanced around, spotted Eleanor, and bounced over to her. He stopped a few steps away, then suddenly raised the crossbow at her.
His smile was eerie, not the kind you’d expect from a child. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, Eleanor whipped out her hairpin, flicked the blade open, and slashed his arm in one swift move.
“Ow!” the boy cried, dropping the crossbow. The arrow shot out, but luckily it landed harmlessly in an empty patch of ground.
At that moment, police sirens wailed outside.

The arguing parents looked over, saw their child clutching his arm while Eleanor stood unharmed, and their expressions changed drastically Without another word, they rushed to grab their son and tried to leave.
“Hey!” Eleanor stopped the father with a firm grip on his arm. “Your kid nearly hurt someone. And you’re just going to walk away without even apologizing? That could’ve been deadly!”
The man kept his hands shoved deep in his pockets, but suddenly his legs gave out and he dropped to his knees with a thud.
Eleanor raised her eyebrows in mock surprise. “What’s this? Kneeling to say sorry?”
The boy’s mom, who was ahead, heard the commotion and turned around. She hesitated for a second, then decided to ditch the father and son, trying to slip away without looking back. But she didn’t get far before someone stopped her.
“We received a report of an attempted assault. Nobody’s leaving,” a police officer announced as he walked in. “Who made the call?”
Tyler held Eleanor back and stepped forward. “That was me.”
The lead officer clearly recognized Tyler and greeted him, “Mr. Langford, long time no see. You’re the one who called?”
“Yeah,” Tyler said, nodding at the man still kneeling on the ground. “Their kid almost hurt someone, and they tried to run. Not sure why he suddenly knelt down. Maybe God is watching over us.”
“Mr. Langford, let’s stick to the facts,” the officer said with a dry cough, “Tell me what happened.”
“Of course.” Tyler’s voice was calm. “Here’s what happened-”
After he finished explaining, the officer turned to Eleanor. “Is this your wife? We really have her to thank this time.”
“She’s been riding horses since she was a kid–her reflexes are top–notch,” Tyler said. “Honestly, I usually mind my own business, but their kid deliberately aimed at her with that thing.”
The officer’s face turned serious. “He tried to attack her?”
Tyler had already picked up the hairpin from the ground, leaving just a lone crossbow bolt lying there.
“That’s the weapon,” Tyler said. “You can take it in for prints. Only the boy touched it. Don’t know why, but he tried to hurt her. Ended up injuring
himself.”
“Yes, that’s right. We all saw it,” Angust added, stepping up. “I swear on my father’s name, I’m telling the truth.”
The officer looked puzzled. “And your father is…?”
Angust’s expression turned serious. “The Marlov family. Ever heard of us? This is my fiancée, Lila. She can swear on her family’s name too.”
Leigh shot Angust a glare, but still said, “Yeah, we’re all witnesses.”

In Harborview, nobody wanted to cross the Langford family. But the Marlovs and Leighs from the capital were at a whole different level. The officer’s imagination ran wild–were these rich kids here undercover for their families? He started to sweat just thinking about it:
Still, procedures had to be followed.
The officer called the owner over to check the security cameras.
“We do have cameras, but the one covering this area is broken and hasn’t been fixed yet,” the owner said. “But since there are witnesses, I think their statements should be enough.”
“Exactly,” Angust said. “No reason for us to lie.”
“You’re all in on this together,” the kneeling man snapped.

Eleanor walked over, patted his pocket, and pulled out a small knife. She tossed it to the ground in surprise. “What kind of parent carries a knife around? That’s seriously creepy.”
The man’s eyes went wide, and suddenly he realized he could move his legs again. But as soon as he tried anything, the officer tackled him, slapped on the cuffs with a click, and said, “You’re coming with us for questioning.”
“Wow, looks like God was watching out,” Eleanor said in mock amazement. “He made you kneel so you wouldn’t do anything worse. Better watch yourself–someone up there is always watching.”
The officer coughed again. “Mrs. Langford, we don’t endorse superstition.”
“Understood,” Eleanor replied. “I’ll keep my mouth shut.”
After the officers left, Eleanor glanced at the owner. “Funny how the cameras just happened to break at the perfect time.”
The boss just smiled and didn’t say a word.
“Eleanor,” Angust scooted over and lowered his voice, “Even if something did go wrong, it’s fine. I’ve got your back.”
Tyler frowned and stepped up, pulling Angust away. “Watch yourself.”
“Oh come on, there’s nothing going on between me and Eleanor. You’re way too nosy,” Angust complained, squeezing in next to Eleanor. “I saw what you did just now. How’d you pull that off?”
Eleanor laughed. “You want to try it too? Angust, you should believe in science. His legs just went numb, that’s all.”
Angust’s eyes lit up, and he called out sweetly, “Sis, come on, tell me!”
Eleanor looked at Angust’s eager face. “If you hit the point on the leg, it can go numb for a bit. But it was just a fluke today; don’t try it on people.”
“So
are those legendary thirty–six death points real?” Angust asked.
“They probably exist, but no one’s ever really tested it. You’d get in serious trouble if you did. It’s just a legend, don’t take it too seriously.”
“Then your ex must be really lucky to still be alive,” Angust said, totally ignoring Eleanor’s warning and letting his imagination run wild.
“What are you even thinking?” Lila gave Angust a hard kick. “Told you to trust science, and you’re still going on about this.”
“Hey, be careful!” Angust complained. “What if you hit the wrong point?”
Lila just rolled her eyes.
“Lila, maybe we shouldn’t go back just yet, Angust suggested. “Someone’s clearly targeting Eleanor.”
“You two sticking around won’t solve anything,” Eleanor said calmly. “You both have your work. I’m pretty sure who’s behind this, and it’ll get sorted out

Angust looked a little disappointed, but quickly grinned. “Alright. I believe in you. You’ve got my number, right? If anything happens, call me
Tyler shot him another sharp look.
“Don’t get so worked up,” Angust said. “Sometimes, having connections is way more useful

than money.”
“I’m not wrong. It’s not like I’m doing anything bad,” Angust grumbled, “Power might be a double–edged sword, but as long as you use it for good, it’s
fine.”
“So naive,” Lila muttered, then looked at Eleanor. “Just be careful.”
