Chapter 38 The Embarrassment
Serena had expected Chris to be repulsed when her lie was exposed. However, to her surprise, Chris’s eyes were filled with quilt. “I’m sorry. I put too much pressure on you, which made you think you were pregnant.”
“My health isn’t great, and my period was delayed. I just thought I was pregnant, Serena whispered. “I’m sorry. I didn’t check properly. I’m really sorry for causing your trouble.”
Kara, standing nearby, felt her anger rising again. From yesterday’s incident, she was already certain that Serena wasn’t innocent. Only Chris thought Serena was pitiable and kind.
Feeling Kara’s gaze, Serena spoke timidly. “Mrs. Langford, I’ll do what I promised you yesterday. Please don’t hate me, and don’t force me to divorce Chris.”
Kara couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
“Mom, don’t be too harsh,” Chris said. “Serena is already upset. What did she promise you yesterday?”
Fine, do whatever you want,” Kara said irritably. “I won’t hold her to her words. Just don’t let it happen again like this time.”
Serena had promised to embarrass Tyler, but in the end, it was Serena who ended up humiliated.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Langford. I really thought I was pregnant.” Serena’s tears fell again.
Kara felt annoyed and simply walked out.
Chris carefully walked Serena back to the Langford mansion, only to find no one there. “Wendy, where are they?”
“Madam Langford went out for High Tea, and Mrs. Eleanor went with her. Sir Langford went to play chess. They probably won’t be back for lunch or dinner,” Wendy replied.
Tears welled up in Serena’s eyes again. “Chris, I can’t fit into your circle. Eleanor can please Madam Langford, but I can’t.”
“Don’t worry. Mom, take Serena to them,” Chris said. “You must know where they are.”
Kara, of course, knew, but slie didn’t want to go. Serena had no real skills; she on knew how to charm men. Kara didn’t want to embarrass herself.

Kara frowned. “What?”
“Madam Langford told me to remind you to check the news online before she left,” Wendy said.
“No, I don’t know anything about it.” Kara simply disassociated herself from it.
“Chris, do you know where Madam Langford is?” Serena asked, puzzled.
“Yes.” Chris nodded. “Grandma has a friend who loves High Tea. I’m sure she’s at Madam Yvonne’s house.”
Chris arrived at the Brooke mansion. As he had guessed, Martha was there.
The security guard, recognizing Chris as Martha’s grandson, didn’t stop him.
Chris took Serena inside. In the room, several madams dressed in smart casual attire were seated, and Eleanor was pouring tea for them.
Today, Eleanor was wearing a mint–green dress, her hair tied up with a simple hair
accessory.
‘Eleanor has nothing but a pretty face. Her heart is extremely filthy, he thought. Chris couldn’t hide his disgust and quickly averted his gaze, feeling uncomfortable even -after just a second.
“What an impolite girl, Chris thought to himself. ‘She’s clearly a guest, but to show off, she’s pouring tea for everyone. Does she think she’s the host? Serena is so much more considerate than Eleanor.
Chris took Serena’s hand and led her forward. “Grandma, I figured you’d be here.”
Martha had been smiling, but her smile dimmed a bit when she heard Chris’s voice. When Martha saw Serena, the smile vanished completely. “Chris, didn’t you go to the hospital?”
“Yeah, Serena was discharged. She gets bored staying home alone, so I brought her here to keep you company,” Chris explained. “Besides, she’s Eleanor’s sister, and they‘ re familiar with each other.”
Martha’s displeasure was evident. “Enough of that. Stop mentioning that Serena is her sister. Eleanor is married to Tyler now; she’s your aunt. Their past identities don’t matter anymore. Do you understand?”
“Chris, let’s go. I don’t want to embarrass you further,” Serena tugged at Chris’s sleeve and whispered. “If people find out that Eleanor married Tyler right after you called off the engagement, her reputation will be tarnished.”
Eleanor, who had been focused on making tea, glanced up at Serena’s words and smiled. “Serena, are you joking? You and Chris are in love. And since your father saved me, I was willing to break off the engagement with Chris to give you two a chance.

“But I had to honor my grandfather’s wishes and fulfill the marriage contract between. the Donovan and Langford families. Tyler was the only single man in the Langford family, so I chose to marry him. Is there anything wrong with that?”
“Is that really the case?” Serena covered her mouth with both hands, relieved and delighted. “That’s great. I thought you married Tyler out of spite to hurt Chris.”
Eleanor laughed, then composed herself. “Serena, you flatter me. Or do you think Christ is better than Tyler? Are you implying that Tyler is just a substitute? Chris, you wouldn‘ t want to replace Tyler, would you? You have quite the ambition.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Serena lowered her head, on the verge of tears again. “Chris, have I caused you more trouble?”
“It’s okay. I know you care about Eleanor. But she doesn’t deserve your concern,” Chris whispered softly, his face filled with disgust when he looked at Eleanor.
“Hey, do you have any manners?” Eleanor spoke up before Chris could say anything.” Chris, you’re bringing shame to the Langford family.”
Chris’s face darkened. Before he could respond, Martha cut in. “Chris, Serena is always causing trouble. Before your engagement, the scandal of her trying to steal you away was common knowledge.
“She claimed to be pregnant when she wasn’t. She said she had a miscarriage when it was just her period. She jumped into the pond and claimed she was pushed. She had a period but insisted on monopolizing medical resources. None of it is honorable.”
Chris clenched his fists. “She is deliberately trying to harm Serena.”
Yvonne laughed. “Martha, your grandson is so naive. Well, don’t let these irrelevant. people spoil your mood. You were just praising Eleanor’s elegant posture and the perfect concentration of the tea she brewed. Indeed, her technique is truly professional. Come on, everyone. Let’s have a taste.”
“Eleanor just loves these fancy things,” Serena suddenly spoke up. “D
