Serena had no idea how long Chris had been standing there or how much he’d overheard. Seeing him turn and walk away without a word, she scrambled after him. “Chris, wait for me.”
“You did that on purpose!” Kara snapped, the shock fading quickly as understanding dawned. “What are you trying to achieve?”
“How could you say I did it on purpose?” Eleanor put on an innocent look. “You twe planned this whole thing. I just raised a question, and Chris happened to overhear. Whatever he thinks about it has nothing to do with me. Don’t worry, you’re his mother. Even if he’s upset, he won’t take it out on you. Though, he’ll probably feel sorry for Serena. You’re smart enough to figure out why.”
Kara shot Eleanor a glare before hurrying off.
Meanwhile, Serena caught up to Chris, grabbing his hand. “I didn’t mean to, she murmured. “I didn’t have a choice.”
“I know what Mom’s like, but couldn’t you have come to me when something like this happened?” Chris said, frustration clear in his voice. “Do you think I’m spineless, that I just do whatever Mom says?”
Serena paused, then recovered quickly. “Chris, I’m sorry. But she’s my mother–in–law. When she asks for something, I can’t refuse. I don’t want to cause problems between you two because of me.”
Chris frowned, then suddenly turned and pulled Serena into a hug, his expression full of pity. “Why are you so foolish? Just doing whatever anyone tells you? Did you even think about yourself?”
“It doesn’t matter about me,” Serena said. “As long as you and your mother don’t fight because of me, I’m content. Chris, honestly, I’m scared too. If you really still have feelings for Eleanor, I’m willing to take the blame and help you two get back together.”
Chris’s expression softened. He patted her back gently. “Don’t be ridiculous. I can barely stand her, how could I possibly still like her?”
“But the way you looked at her after her audition… it was different,” Serena whispered. “I’m really afraid you’ll regret this.” “I swear, I will never regret it,” Chris vowed firmly. “So, don’t let yourself be mistreated either.”
“Okay, Chris. And don’t blame your mother too much,” Serena added softly. “She just dislikes Eleanor and went about things the wrong way. She’s still your mom, after all.”
Chris’s face hardened. “I know how to handle it.”
Kara, hidden around a corner, heard every word.
“Kara, what are you doing eavesdropping?” A voice sounded beside her.
Kara turned to see Eleanor and snapped, “Was this your doing too?”
“What does this have to do with me?” Eleanor asked, feigning surprise. “Did I make her say those things? Being wrongly accused twice in one day, I really am pitiful.”
Kara stared at Eleanor for a moment. “I really underestimated you before. I never realized you had such a sharp tongue.” “I’ve always been like this,” Eleanor said coolly. “I just respected you because I used to like Chris.”
“I don’t understand you. Why did you marry Tyler?” Kara asked. “If it was to get revenge on my son, isn’t that a rather steep price to pay?”
“What are you talking about, Kara? Obviously, it’s because I like Tyler,” Eleanor smiled. “He’s good to me, I like him. What’s wrong with that? As for Chris, he doesn’t like me, so why should I like him? Mutual dislike, perfectly fair.”
Kara scrutinized Eleanor’s face, searching for any sign of deception, but found none.
“Kara, I’d advise you to drop the petty games,” Eleanor continued. “Any alliance you think you have with Serena won’t last. Of course, I’m not trying to stir up trouble between you two. If you have a falling out with Serena, your son probably won’t be happy. My mother is planning to announce that she no longer considers Serena her adopted daughter. If she gets divorced after that, she really will be in a pathetic situation.”
“What did you say?” Kara was shocked. She had never particularly liked Serena, only considering her potentially useful as the Donovans‘ adopted daughter. If she was just an ordinary person now, what use was she?
