Chapter 67 Twist The Knife
Chris froze, momentarily speechless.
“It’s not just about what’s nutritious, but what your body can actually use,” Tyler stated coolly. “Eleanor runs cold, Milk’s not her thing. Makes perfect sense.”
“Tyler, that’s blatant favoritism,” Chris retorted, frustration simmering.
“Guilty,” Tyler chuckled. “She’s my wife. Who else should I favor? Besides, she went to the trouble of making breakfast. Oh, right, because Serena mentioned once that milk and eggs are the breakfast of champions, she only fixed milk and eggs for you two. These bacon, sandwiches… You guys missed out.”
Chris was fuming. “Tyler, I know you’re doing this on purpose. It’s fine. Serena, you used to make me amazing breakfasts, right? We’ll just whip something up ourselves.”
Serena’s face tightened. “Actually, I think Eleanor’s arrangement is fine.”
“The ingredients are in the kitchen. If you’re lost, you can always ask for help,” Eleanor offered smoothly.
“No need. Serena’s a pro, Chris said, pulling Serena to her feet.
Serena’s expression grew increasingly strained. “Chris, that was years ago. I’ve forgotten how to make half of it.” Eleanor’s eyes flashed with amusement. She’d learned to cook from the family chef. Too shy to give it to Chris herself, she‘ d asked Serena to deliver it. Never imagining it would become Serena’s claim to fame.
“Tyler, try this rose cake,” Eleanor said sweetly, offering Tyler a pastry. “Our former chef was from Atlanta. A tea party whiz. I shadowed him for a while. I wasn’t confident enough in my skills to put myself out there, so I asked Serena to help out back then.”
Chris swung around to face Eleanor, suspicion clouding his features. “What exactly are you implying?”
“Implying what?” Eleanor shrugged. “I gave her the food. Whether she ate it herself or gave it away, am I supposed to keep tabs?”
Chris slowly turned his gaze to Serena. “Those breakfasts… did you actually make them?”
Serena paled, tears welling up. “Why bring that up now, after all these years? Would you have liked me less if I hadn’t made them myself? I never said I did. You just assumed.”
Seeing Serena cry, Chris panicked. He glared at Eleanor. “You’re doing this on purpose. You know Serena can’t cook any of that stuff. Eleanor, me and you are never going to happen.”
“Madam, look,” Eleanor whined to Madam, feigning hurt. “I was just setting the record straight. How did that become my fault? People change. Now, Tyler is my number one.”
Tyler, who had been sipping his Earl Grey, choked slightly, coughing delicately.
Madam interjected, “Chris, I recall you mentioning once that the Donovan’s adopted daughter made delicious brunch. Seems you were mistaken. But since you made the mistake, just live with it.”
“Grandma, that’s not true,” Serena said softly. “I admit, I had feelings for Chris for a long time. But Eleanor was into him, so I hid my feelings. It was wrong of me not to say who made the food.”
Chris stared at Serena, a flicker of annoyance rising within him, quickly suppressed by another emotion. “Serena, it’s okay. Who made it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you brought it to me.”
Eleanor laughed. “Here’s a joke- it doesn’t matter who writes a proposal, just who prints it out.”
Tyler drawled, “In my company, that’s called plagiarism. It’s a fireable offense.”
Serena clenched her fists, then abruptly stood up.
“Serena, one more thing. Marital issues should never be flaunted in front of elders. It’s impolite.” Madam said.
“I understand,” Serena said, a picture of wounded innocence, before hurrying out.
“Serena!” Chris shouted.
Watching Chris chase after Serena, Eleanor sighed dramatically. “I’m the victim here, and even I’ve moved on. How come the instigator can’t let it go?”
Tyler turned to Eleanor, a glint in his eyes. “Loc’s

“You’re right, Tyler,” Madam chimed in. “How are the wedding plans coming along?”
“The venue just needs a few final touches,” Tyler replied. “Should be all set by this weekend.”
“Good, good, Madam nodded. “Eleanor, what about that acting role you mentioned?”

“Oh, it won’t interfere,” Eleanor assured her. “That acting gig wasn’t really planned, anyway. The wedding comes first,
obviously.”
“That’s for sure.” Kara said from the side, “It’s better to marry well than to work well.”
“Kara, I think you misunderstand,” Eleanor countered smoothly. “I do have my own ambitions, I just don’t broadcast them. Besides, Mom wants me to start learning the ropes at the company. But,” she added, a playful glint in her eye, “I always wondered what it would be like to act when I was a kid. This seemed like a fun chance to try it. And honestly? Don’t get mad, but yeah, part of me just wants to drive Serena crazy.”
Tyler quirked a lip. ‘She really doesn’t hold back, he thought.
Madam chuckled, clearly amused. “Better to be upfront about it than scheme behind backs. I must say, I’m curious to see what kind of excitement you’ll stir up, dear.”
Kara’s expression hardened. ‘If Eleanor had married Chris, she thought bitterly, ‘at least Chris would be getting some of this attention, some benefit.‘ The thought fueled her growing resentment towards Serena.
“It’s fine to have hobbies, but one must know their place,” Kara said, her words aimed sharply. “Tyler, I’d watch out if I were you.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Tyler said smoothly. “Actually, I’ve always been a bit interested in acting myself. So, I spoke with the director. Out of respect for the writer – give him a chance to be seen, you know? – he suggested Angust could play the second lead. And I’ll take the main role. Since I’m getting married, it’s not unreasonable to want a little keepsake from this time, right?”
Eleanor stared at Tyler. “Since when?”
“Just yesterday. Slipped my mind,” Tyler replied easily. “Later, I’ll go with you to see Angust. I was thinking, for the show’s publicity, we could add a line like ‘A protégé’s wedding gift to his mentor.‘ Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
Madam shot Tyler a knowing look. ‘Just like his father, she mused, ‘always knows how to twist the knife.’
Later, at the hotel, Angust Marlov woke up naturally. A knock at the door brought him out of bed. He opened it to find Eleanor, and a smile instantly lit up his face – until he saw Tyler Langford standing right behind her. The smile vanished.
“We need to talk to you about something,” Tyler stated, stepping forward slightly. “Has your mother or the director been in touch?”
