Chapter 74 Old Classmates
“I knew there had to be something behind it-” Vera suddenly stopped mid–sentence and turned to Eleanor. “Wait, are you saying Tyler has liked you all along? The guy everyone says isn’t into women? That’s insane.”
Eleanor gave a faint smile as she watched Vera’s stunned reaction. “Is it really that shocking?”
“Of course it is,” Vera exclaimed. “This is huge. So, did it happen after you saved him? Like, love at first sight?”
“No, it was even earlier than that,” Eleanor replied. “I was just as surprised when I found out.”
“Come on, admit it–doesn’t it make you a little happy?” Vera asked, her face lighting up with curiosity. “I knew it. There’s no way he’s been so accommodating just because you saved his life. Turns out, there was a whole backstory.”
“What’s going on between you and Logan?” Eleanor switched the topic. “I thought your family and the Wellers didn’t have any business ties.”
“Exactly. We’ve never had anything to do with them. But out of nowhere, Logan decides he wants to work with us. No idea what he said to my dad, but now I’m stuck dealing with him.” Vera rolled her eyes in exasperation.
She said, “Just because his car got scratched and I didn’t pay him, he’s making such a big deal out of it. Seriously, is that worth all this drama?”
Eleanor smirked, her tone playful. “Could it be… he’s got a thing for you?”
“Don’t even go there.” Vera was shocked. “He’s so not my type. Speaking of disasters, let’s talk about your wedding. I couldn’t focus earlier with that guy hanging around. So, you think Chris‘ mom might try to stir up trouble? What’s her deal?” “You can never be too careful,” Eleanor replied. “Who knows what they might try.”
“Ugh, like mother, like son.” Vera scoffed. “But don’t worry. If they dare to mess with you, I’ll make sure they regret it. By the way, ever since you married Tyler, we haven’t had a proper meal together. Are you free today?”
“Sure,” Eleanor said. “I’ll wait till you wrap up work.”
Vera chuckled. “Won’t take long. Just hope Tyler doesn’t call and steal you away, leaving your poor friend hanging.” “Even if he does, I’m not ditching you. Come on, do I look like someone who’d do that?” Eleanor said.
“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten. Back when you were with Chris, one call from him and you’d drop everything to run to him. And if you didn’t? Boom, breakup threats,” Vera said. “Now that you two are done, I don’t have to hold back anymore. “We actually fought about it, you know. He called you his simp, said you’d never dare go against him. Oh, and let me guess -did he ever tell you to stay away from me?”
Eleanor nodded. “Yeah, he did. Said you’d be a bad influence.”
“Figures,” Vera muttered, lowering her voice. “What he probably didn’t tell you is that I got so fed up, I gave him a good kick. Judging by the look on his face, I must’ve really nailed him.” She burst out laughing at the memory.
“No way. He never told me that,” Eleanor said. “But now that you mention it, I do remember him being unusually flustered that day.”
Vera laughed even harder. “I knew he wouldn’t dare to say anything. By the way, are you planning to invite any of our old classmates to the wedding?”
“Not many people know about my background, so I think I’ll pass,” Eleanor replied. “Only you and Dora know about it. I reached out to her a few days ago, but she’s out of town for training and won’t be able to make it. As for the others, we were never that close anyway.”
“Exactly. We haven’t kept in touch for years, and suddenly sending them a wedding invite? It’s like asking for cash gifts,” Vera said, sounding annoyed. “Eleanor, we’ve always kept a low profile about how wealthy we are, but some people–ugh.
“The moment they get a little status, they act like they’re better than everyone else.
“Can you believe it? I ran into one of them at work, and she thought I was a janitor. Oh, and she said she knows we’re close and asked me to pass this to you.”
Vera rummaged through the trash can and pulled out an invitation, handing it to Eleanor.
Eleanor frowned as she looked at the name on the card. “Catherine Owens? Who is she? I don’t remember her.
“You don’t remember? She used to have a crush on Chris. Then somehow, she got pretty close to Serena, Vera explained. *

“A class reunion?” Eleanor said. “It’s just one meal. After that, we’ll go back to not talking again.”
Vera waved her hand. “Forget about her, such a buzzkill. So–you really going for the whole traditional wedding vibe? Not

even a tiny twist to make it fun?
“Tyler’s way too slick, you know. Bet he just wanted the easiest route possible. No way we’re letting him off the hook He can’t just marry you without putting in some effort.”
Eleanor tugged at the corner of her lips. “Don’t even think about stirring up trouble-
“Oh, look at you, already defending him.” Vera teased with a grin.
Eleanor’s phone rang, breaking the moment–it was Tyler.
“I’m with Vera. We’re having lunch together. Want to join us? Eleanor glanced at Vera, who raised her eyebrows in surprise before flashing an OK sign. “Alright, come pick us up then, Eleanor said into the phone
Once Eleanor hung up, Vera chuckled. “This one’s pretty good, definitely better than the last guy. That one wouldn’t even treat me to dinner.”
After finishing up, Vera went downstairs with Eleanor. At the company entrance, they spotted a woman dressed flamboyantly.
“That’s her,” Vera said. “Tell me, do I look that bad today? At the very least, I should look like a white–collar workers, right? Butt she had the nerve to call me a janitor.”
Eleanor replied, “Maybe it’s because you mentioned your parents worked as janitors?”
Vera thought for a moment. “That was just something I said casually. When we were kids, adults always told us to keep a low profile to avoid trouble.”
As they were talking, Catherine turned her head and noticed Eleanor and Vera. Eleanor could feel Catherine’s gaze on her- it was sharp and unfriendly.
“Well, well, what a coincidence running into old classmates again today, Catherine said as she walked over Eleanor frowned slightly. ‘How much perfume did she use? It’s overpowering, she thought
“Eleanor, I heard Chris was keeping you not too long ago. Now look at you, job hunting too? What, aiming for a cleaning gig? “My husband works here–he’s a manager. Want me to help you out?” Serena sneered. ‘Oh, and Chris is married now. Not to you though. Guess your sugar daddy finally moved on, huh?”
Back in school, everyone knew Chris was the young master of the Langford family in Westbridge. The rumors spread like wildfire when he first enrolled. Soon after, word got out that Serena, two years his senior, was his childhood sweetheart. Even so, Linda had always been strict, forbidding Eleanor from revealing her own family background. Eleanor still remembered how Serena had acted back then–full of guilt, claiming she was only doing it to help Eleanor fend off unwanted attention. And Linda had believed her.
When Eleanor didn’t respond, Catherine grew irritated. “Hey. I’m talking to you. Are you deaf or just ignoring me?”
The sharp honk of a car broke the tension, A Range Rover slowly pulled up, and the window rolled down to reveal Tyler inside. “Eleanor, get in,” he said.
