Chapter 84 Sugarcoated Lines
Chapter 84 Sugarcoated Lines
“You think it’s her?” Lila stared straight at Eleanor. “You really never thought maybe she and I were working together?”
“If she could get what she wanted from you, she wouldn’t have gone looking for those so–called superfans,” Eleanor replied. “Besides, I know you wouldn’t do anything to upset Angust.”
“Why do you trust her so much, Eleanor?” Angust chimed in. “Honestly, I think she’ll just do whatever she wants. She doesn‘ t care about what I like at all.”
Lila glanced at Angust, a flicker of hurt crossing her face.
“Angust, you really don’t trust her?” Eleanor asked.
“That’s right,” Angust said. “I grew up with her–don’t I know her best? Eleanor, you don’t believe me?”
“Angust, let me say it again: I don’t do sneaky things. If I really wanted to do something, I wouldn’t use someone else to do
it for me. You know why I’m acting, don’t you? I’ll prove this has nothing to do with me,” said Lila
Angust let out a short snort and said to Eleanor with a grin, “Don’t worry, Eleanor. I’ve got this covered.”
“No need.” Tyler’s voice was icy as he spoke up. “I’ll handle my wife’s business myself. No need for outsiders to butt in. Maybe you should focus on your own issues instead of meddling in ours.”
“I don’t need you to tell me that,” Angust shot back. “You just got lucky because you were always around her. If I’d proposed first, you wouldn’t have stood a chance.
He turned to Eleanor. “Eleanor, are you really not going to give me a chance? Go ahead and ask around–the Marlov family is a big deal in the capital.”
“I’ve already looked into it,” Tyler replied. “The Marlovs have a lot of influence in the capital. Your grandfather is a major player, and he’s the one who set up your engagement when you and Lila were kids.
“You think Lila isn’t good enough for you because she was brought back from the countryside, and deep down, you see her as rough around the edges.
! “Her birth mother disappeared, and now she’s trying to make a name for herself as an actress, hoping her mom will see her
one day.”
Angust said, “So you’ve done your homework. Then you should know what I bring to the table. You might have some pull in Westbridge, but you’re still no match for the Marlovs. So what happens if we decide to shut you out?”
Tyler just smiled at Angust’s challenge. “But isn’t your mom the one actually running the Marlov family? I’ve already talked to her, and we’re planning to work even closer together. We’re both pretty happy with the arrangement.”
“Seriously?” Angust grumbled. “She’s actually teaming up with an outsider? Some mother she is.” He then said to Eleanor, ” Eleanor, you and my mom are both getting played. Some people act so much, they can’t stop pretending even in real life.” Eleanor watched as Lila tried to hold back her tears, and a wave of déjà vu washed over her. “Angust, you really shouldn’t be so quick to judge.”
“Eleanor, I’ve made myself clear–I’m not marrying her. It’s not like I’ve been stringing her along, right?” Angust sighed. “She‘ s the one who keeps chasing after me. You can’t force love.”
“Let it go,” Tyler said, resting his hand on Eleanor’s shoulder. “When it comes to feelings, people always lose perspective. Not everyone can stay as clear–headed as I am.”
Eleanor glanced at Tyler. “And what makes you so sure you’re the clear–headed one?”
Tyler replied, “Because from the very start, I’ve always known exactly what I want, and what kind of person I want. No matter what anyone else says about her, it won’t change my mind.”
A smile appeared on Eleanor’s face. Even if he was just saying it, she still loved hearing those words.
“Pfft, just some sugarcoated lines,” Angust muttered. “That’s just not my thing. You don’t like hearing that stuff either, do you, Eleanor?”
“No, actually, I do,” Eleanor said with a laugh.
Angust glanced at Eleanor and, for once, caught a rare hint of shyness on her face–she looked almost girlish, so different from her usual self. In his mind, Eleanor was always cool and capable, handling everything with ease.
Sometimes, when she was alone, he’d see her sitting quietly a h
a hit lost her expression dim. But whenever they worked together, she always kept her feelings hidden, eSuccessfully unlocked!ugh her.
It wasn’t until one night when she got drunk that Angust found out about Chris. He had thought, ‘Someone like Eleanor, someone that good, shouldn’t be wasting tears on a guy like that.’
But before he could do anything, his family tricked him into coming home and kept a close eye on him. Compared to when they first met, Eleanor seemed so much more alive now. Love–or the lack of it–could really change a person.

“Angust, you shouldn’t waste your energy on me anymore,” Eleanor said. “You’ve got someone by your side now. Don’t wait till you screw it up to start regretting things.”
“Eleanor, what about you? Why don’t you try to get Chris back? I still don’t get it–if you can fall for someone else, why can’t that person be me?” Angust asked.
“Get him back?” Eleanor let out a mocking laugh. “When you’re in love, you can put up with anything. But once you stop loving someone, they’re nothing to you.
“I was slow to realize it before, but now I see–the one who’s always been there fore, helping me through everything, is Tyler.”
“That’s just gratitude, not love,” Angust said. “Eleanor, are you really sure you won’t regret this?”
“I won’t,” Eleanor replied. “You’re my friend, and I don’t want you to turn into the kind of man I can’t stand.”
“Huh?” Angust was puzzled.
“The cocky, full–of–himself type. The ones who crush the hearts of the girls who actually care about them and never believe a word they say,” Eleanor continued.
Angust pouted. “Well, that kind of depends on what kind of person she is, doesn’t it?”
“Angust, zip it,” Lila cut in, pulling out a black card and handing it to Eleanor. “Eleanor, technically we’re rivals in love, but I really like you–and I even envy you a bit. I’d love for us to be friends.
“Take this card. If you ever come to the capital, just look for me at the Vance family. With this card, you’ll be treated like a VIP in any mall.”
“Oh, come on. Since when did the Vance family get that powerful?” Angust said.
“Maybe because I know a guy who is that impressive. There’s a whole lot you don’t know,” Lila shot back.
Tyler glanced at the card in Eleanor’s hand, a little surprised that Lila actually had it. He thought, ‘So, there’s a connection between her and that guy. Been a while since I’ve seen him.
‘I think he did mention once he met someone from the Vance family while he was in the capital. This just got interesting.‘ Noticing the look on Tyler’s face, that half–smirk half–squint kind of stare, Angust blurted out, “Tyler, what’s with that face?” “Nothing, just thinking that the guy Lila mentioned is probably way better than you.” With that, Tyler took Eleanor’s hand.” Let’s not get involved in other people’s mess.”

Once they were outside, Eleanor tugged on Tyler’s arm. “Tyler, you know who that guy Lila was talking about is, right?”
