Chapter 7 Nothing to Hold Back
The next morning, during breakfast, Marcel brought up the topic of merging the two families again.
“Monica, eat more. You look like you’ve lost weight again.” He sighed. “It seems this child really is weighing on you. I think it would be better if Thad took on the responsibility of merging the families and looked after
you more.”
Sarah nodded in agreement. “You’re Paul’s wife, and Thad is our son. As Paul’s older broth- er, it’s only right that he takes on the responsibilities of the family. He should be taking care of you, so don’t feel uncomfortable about it.”
I was not sure what Paul said to Jessie last night, but this time she didn’t argue. She just looked upset, her fists clenched tightly as she glared at me with jealousy.
I glanced up at Paul.
He looked irritated, his tone sharp. “Yesterday you were talking about getting an abortion, right? You just want to use that to pressure me into agreeing to the family merger, don’t you? Fine, for Paul’s sake, I’ll swallow my pride and agree to it, just this once.”
Then, with a trace of annoyance, he added, “Once we merge the families, don’t you dare throw any more tantrums or bring up abortion again. Don’t hurt our feelings–or the child’s- again.”
I almost laughed out of frustration when I heard this. I thought, ‘The man has done countless awful things, and now he wants a child? He can forget it!‘

conversation last night, I couldn’t care less about them anymore.
They were kind to me only because of Graham. To them, I was just an outsider they could use. I thought, ‘Fine. At least now I have nothing left to hold back.‘
I shook my head, my voice cold. “There’s no need to merge the families. Let Thad and Jessie

I had already called Graham this morning and arranged for the driver to come pick me up.
The driver hadn’t arrived yet, and aside from me, everyone here was from the Rodgers fami- ly. I didn’t want to make things too messy just yet.
So, I took a deep breath and looked at my in–laws. “My dad is always worried that I might be too upset and not think clearly. He’s afraid I’ll get too depressed, so he wants to take me back to his place for a few days.”
