Chapter 8 Make Them Pay
My in–laws tried to stop me, but before they could say much, Graham showed up in person with the driver. They quickly plastered on fake smiles and hurriedly escorted me out.
When Graham saw how worn out and thin I looked, his big, sturdy frame filled with concern, and his eyes turned red with emotion. He, of course, didn’t spare the Rodgers family a single glance, keeping a dark expression and completely ignoring them as he led me away.
My in–laws exchanged awkward glances, while Paul shot me a dark, resentful glare, as though I had personally humiliated him.
In the past, I couldn’t bear to make things hard for my in–laws or Paul. Even when Graham was upset, I would try to sweet–talk him into softening his mood. But now, I couldn’t care less about that family. I just got into the car.
Once we were out of the Rodgers family’s estate, I started speaking more gently to Graham.
He didn’t know about the harm Paul had caused me. All he saw was that I had lost weight and looked sickly, so he blamed the Rodgers family for not taking proper care of me and
took his frustration out on them.
Graham had always been incredibly protective of me. After my mom passed away when I was young, he never remarried. He raised me on his own, showering me with love and care, and treating me like I was the most precious thing in his world.
Everyone who knew him said he loved my mom deeply. After her death, he was nearly bro- ken. He barely found the will to keep going, and it was only because of me that he found hope again. Since then, all his focus has been on me.
When Paul died, I thought Graham and I were both unlucky souls, bound by the pain of los- ing someone we loved.
I wanted to be like Graham, to see my child as my reason to keep going, to cherish and spoil them just like he did for me. But I never expected my parents to have such a genuine, deep love for each other.

I first met Thad and Paul when I was in kindergarten. I was so young, always following Thad around.
Seeing how much I liked him, Graham quickly arranged for me to be engaged to Thad, then started supporting the Rodgers family. He helped them go from a modest family to building a successful business and eventually a publicly listed company.
Later, my engagement was switched to Paul, and I was humiliated all over again.
He feared the Rodgers family might look down on me, so he went out of his way to make sure I had a better life. He helped them even more.
And now, after all that, the Rodgers family had enjoyed all the benefits of Graham’s support. No wonder they weren’t ready to let go. They’d used me for years and still managed to ruin my life.
But mark my words–I’d make them pay it all back, with interest!
