Chapter 5 Lucky Charm
I didn’t waste any time pondering what Irene was trying to say. I rearranged the ice pieces
to fit the formation I had in my head and sneered. “You won’t be taking the supplies that
easily this time, you two. Enjoy the surprise.”
I found this place through sheer luck, and yes, it was filled with supplies, but someone set up an Esoteric Divination formation at the entrance. Regular people could come and go as they pleased, but metahumans only had a one–way ticket into this place, and neither could they touch the food.
This formation could not be broken unless someone knew how it was exactly made or
destroyed their own Ability. Maybe some sort of expert in mystic arts made this to give regular people a chance at survival.
It was fortunate I dabbled in Esoteric Divination before the apocalypse hit, or I’d have fallen into the trap as well. Now that the trap was remade, I made my way toward another base. It was called Dawnlight, a place run by Joshua’s nemesis, Shawn Week.
I sat outside the base’s entrance instead of lining up, but the volunteers still gave me hot
water and warm clothes. Sure, it wasn’t as fancy as the ones metahumans had, but it could help regular people fend off the cold, even if just a little.
The volunteers saw me looking at the base, and they kindly said, “We treat even regular
people nicely. You have nothing to worry about.”
“I know. I’m waiting for someone.‘
A group of off–road vehicles came rushing toward the entrance, but they stopped for a check as per protocol. I went toward the second car.
The window rolled down, revealing an arrogant face behind it. Shawn snickered. “Well, well, if it isn’t the precious Healer of Mystic Tiger.”
I smiled. “Will your base take me in?”

“My sources told me you’re stripped of your Ability. We do take in regular people, but you’ll have to get in line. Did you think I’d give you special treatment for Joshua’s sake? Sorry, I
couldn’t care less about him. I’d kill him if I had the chance.”
Every time they tried to hunt for supplies, Joshua would always get there first, and they would be late by just one moment. Even before the apocalypse, he was always keeping Shawn in second place.
“Oh, but I have a full warehouse worth of supplies.”
Shawn finally looked at me.
“And our goals align,” I added.
He smiled. “Dawnlight respects those with strength. I hope you won’t let us down.”
The supermarket wasn’t the only place I found that time. The warehouse was another.
However, I kept that information hidden just in case and covered it up with an Esoteric
Divination formation.
I thanked myself for making a habit of always keeping a backup plan. A couple of days of
rest later, I went on a hunt with Shawn. A hunt for Icebeasts. I held my dragon pendant, and not too long after that, someone in the team happily shouted, “Captain, it’s a White Fox!
It’s a rare Icebeast!
White Foxes‘ beast cores were incredibly pure. They could be used to power up Abilities, and the metahuman wouldn’t even have to worry about the toxins present in usual beast
cores.
Shawn was surprised as well. Running into one White Fox was already lucky enough, but this time, they ran into a pack. “Prepare to hunt!” He quickly made his orders, ensuring I had some bodyguards.
The battle ended soon enough, and everyone in the team made some nice income. Just when they thought the surprise was over, someone shouted, “Water Dragons dead ahead, captain!”
