“So?” Irene snatched the phone out of my hold. “Do you care about her now! Come to your senses, Xander. You’ve finally gotten all that you’ve ever wanted and we’re back together again. Are you going to ruin it all over some bitch! Are you in love with her?”
“Of course not!” My denial was quick. There is no way I could be in love with her. Mia is very different from the class of women I desire.
Then let her be. I know you’re concerned about her, but if you call her now, she’ll misunderstand and start to cling to you again.” Irene’s lips brushed against mine, her arms curling up behind my neck.
I kissed her back, defeating my resistance and the lingering thought of my ex–wife. Her warmth seeped into me, reminding me of the reason why I had fallen for her in the first place.
As our
kiss deepened, Irene’s hands roamed, discarding my clothes. I lifted her into my arms, immersing myself in the sensation.
Thoughts of Mia faded slowly, replaced by the gentle pressure of Irene’s lips and the soft curves of her body against mine. The feel of her skin completely tore off my resolve.
As I delved into her warmth. I assured myself that she was right. This is all I’ve ever wanted. Mia was my past now, and she was my present and future.

Chapter 4
Mia’s POV
My phone started to ring, it was Kyle. Without a thought, I ended the call. Telling him where I was would only lead to him trying to get me to change my mind.
I gripped the steering wheel tightly, screaming when a flash of lightning met my sight. My heart thumped as I increased the speed of the wipers, my knuckles white as I navigated through the darkness on the empty highway.
Tears were streaming down my face, and my body shook with fear, but I couldn’t turn around; I needed to meet Xander. He was waiting for me.
My eyes lingered on the text message that I had received from him minutes ago and my determination intensified. Xander was happy about the news and he wanted us to get married for real, insisting that I meet him at that moment with the divorce papers and my bags so he could properly apologize to me with a vacation.
How could I miss a moment like this over a stupid phobia?
Rain slashed against my windshield, defeating the force of the wipers and my heartbeat continuously skipped in fear. My breath came In short gasps and my palms felt sweaty despite the cold.
I jolted again at the sound of a thunder cracking but I gulped my fear.
My phobia screamed at me to turn the car around, to find shelter but I shook my head and discarded the thought.
“I can’t stop. I won’t stop. I continuously assured myself, gaining hope and strength from Xander’s text.
I squinted, focusing on the road ahead and straining my eyes through the darkness, My car sped forward into the stormy night
1 glanced at the GPS. I was near. Holding my breath, I accelerated and another scream left my lungs as a bolt of lightning split the sky.
The GPS told me I was close, but my surroundings didn’t look like any place for a meeting. As I drove on. I sighted my destination ahead. It was a bridge.
1 pulled up, taking a deep breath to calm myself. I climbed out of the car, the rain instandy soaking my clothes as 1 scanned the area.
Soon, I sighted Xander’s car; he had driven it to work earlier that day. A smile spread on my lips as I sighted his figure, leaning on the bridge’s railing
was shivering
“Xander!” I burst out in excitement as I approached him, not minding the storm that threatened my steps or my body that was sh in fear from the cold
I touched his shoulder and the figure turned, taking off their raincoat cap. My smile dissolved, and my legs impulsively staggered back in fear and confusion.
“I–Irene?” I stammered, a frown creasing my brows. “W–why are you here! Wh–where is”
“Your sweet husband, Xander?” She completed my shaky words with a sly smile. “I told you to stay away from him, didn’t I? You’re one persistent lowlife, Mia.”
“Take me to Xander. We’re supposed to.” my words broke into a scream at a heavy thunderclap, and I covered my ears with my palms, waiting it out.
Irene laughed. “Xander was right. You really are scared of thunderstorms, yet you drove out in the rain over a text that I sent to you”
I froze in shock, realization dawning on me like a bag of ice. “It was you who sent it?”
“Of course it was me. Since you won’t leave my man alone, I’ve come to tear you off him forever. I warned you, didn’t I? I said I’d kill you the next time you cling to him.”
“Xander does not love you!” My teeth chattered as I spoke.
“Yet he’s discarding you for me. Do you even know why Xander got married to you in the first place? He did it to fulfill his father’s wish, it was the only way he could get his inheritance. He would have divorced you sooner but the old man unexpectedly lived longer than we thought. You were a tool all along to make our lives perfect-
“That’s not true!” I cut her off, tears streaming down my face. It wasn’t about the phobia anymore, my chest was hurting in pain from Irene’s words.
Chapter 4
“Xander got married to me because he wanted to get over you. He wanted to love me too and he did!”
“So why is he abandoning you for me?” Mia sneered. “Think about it, Mia. If we both called Xander right now, who do you think he would answer?” Her eyes narrowed as she approached me, each step ringing a dangerous fear in my heart.
“He
le loves me?” I yelled, desperate to believe it myself.
“Why? Because of the baby in your womb?” Her eyes dropped to my stomach and her face hardened with fury. “That’s why I’m here to get rid of it”
Before I could process her words, her arms reached out and grabbed me. My inind reeled as I struggled to fight her off, but her grip was

Irene.” I struggled, the force of her grip peeling off the skin of my arm. “Please, let me go, I beg you.” I resorted to my only
“That’s too risky now,” she snarled, extracted a knife from the pocket of her coat and within the blink of an eye, drove it into my stomach.
The pain seared, exploding within me and a gasp left my mouth. I stumbled backward, my hand gripping my stomach as I tried to save the little life growing inside of me.
The knife sliced into my stomach a second time and then slashed across my face before she released me. My breath hitched as I staggered back and forth, desperately clutching my bleeding tummy.
My vision blurred and I reached out, trying to grab something. Anything, but I ended up falling to my knees.
With a firm push. Irene jabbed me in the stomach with her feet, and I tumbled over the railing. As I fell, my hand clutching my stomach and my mind longing for Xander, her voice echoed as she spoke into her cell phone:
“Yes Xander, it’s done. The bitch is gone for good.”
Time slowed. My breath stopped. I couldn’t scream, my lungs were filled with the amount of shock that reverberated through me. Only one thing was on my mind- not my incoming death, not my baby whose life I no longer felt, not my fate but Xander. The reality of his true intention hit me like tons of bricks.
I know he didn’t love me but I had no idea he hated me this much. Instead of facing the truth of our baby, Xander got rid of me to cover everything. I meant nothing to him, everything we shared was nothing. Nothing at all
My body hit the water and it quickly swallowed me up. Even as I shut my eyes, surrendering to death, the last thing on my mind was

Alexander Schaeffer, the man I had married after secretly being in love with for five years, was my enemy.
