Chapter 6
Xander’s POV
My head throbbed with a slight ache as I stepped out of f my car, the morning lazily creeping in.
I had barely entered my house when a vice–like grip clutched my collar,
“You heartless jerk!” Kyle snarled, his eyes blazing. “Where is she? Where is Mia?”
Agrimace appeared on my face. Mia wasn’t home!
“Kyle, stop this!” My mother intervened, prying Kyle’s fingers off me.
I glanced at the time, it was past midnight. The rain had slowed to a drizzle but I had no idea Mia hadn’t returned home
“Mia isn’t home?” I couldn’t help but ask, my brows furrowed in confusion.
“Don’t play dumb, Xander! You kicked her out of your house in the middle of a thunderstorm. You know she hates the rain, you know she has no one. How can you be so heartless?” Kyle shoved me in the chest but my thoughts swayed.
At once. I sprinted past
ast him to Mia’s room. My eyes landed on the folder on her desk, and I flipped through it; the divorce papers were missing. I dashed into her closet, it was empty.
Her bags are gone.
“That ungrateful wench, after all we did for her she couldn’t even say goodbye before leaving, my mother’s voice was laced with irritation. Although I tried not to show it, I couldn’t help but feel that something was amiss.
“I told you she was no good for you. See how she repays us after everything we did for her!”
I walked out of Mia’s room, my mind clouded with worry.
Did my threat scare her so much that she shoved her fear aside and ran?
“Did Mia say anything to you before she left?” I asked my housekeeper.
“No, sir. She just packed up and left in the rain. When I asked, she said she would be back soon.”
I ran a hand through my hair, my face clenching.
“Quit the pretense, Xander. Hubert told me how you threatened to throw her out. Now you’re acting like this is shocking to you?” Kyle scoffed. “All she did wrong was love you; you never deserved her.”
“You both are pretty close. If she went anywhere, you’d be the first person to know, I shrugged, but deep down, I knew I hoped that she mentioned something to Kyle.
“I never should have pressured her into meeting you yesterday, that was what led her to make a thoughtless decision. Now, she won’t even take my calls and she said goodbye to me over a text. Over a fucking text, Mia would never do that!” His tone sparked with fury. “Mia has no family, she loved you with all of her. I hope you’re happy now, Xander?”
“She knew from the start that we were meant to end like this. It’s not my fault that she got attached” 1 grimaced, masking my unease.
Mia knew the rules. This might be unlike her, but it was for the best; she had to move on.
“You heartless jerk.” Kyle started to charge at me but he was held back.
“Kyle, are you crazy? You’re going to fight your brother because of that ungrateful woman?” My mom stepped in.
“That ungrateful woman who worked her butt off helping you with the companies, that ungrateful woman that stayed devoted to you even though you treated her like trash?” Kyle wagged a finger at me, but my mind was too busy to mind his threat
Kyle’s words piqued my anxiety. If there was one person in the world that Mia was close to, it was Kyle. They had been friends way before we got married, and she tells him everything, but all of a sudden, she’s not only cutting me off, she’s cutting Kyle off too!
To block off the feeling of concern, I poured myself some wine while reflecting on everything that had happened, trying to make it all
“Xander, ignore him. He’s acting like this because he is just realizing the kind of person Mia is My mom came to my side. Her hand

reached to touch me but I adjusted out of her hold, throwing her a stare.
“I want to be alone, I announced, rising to my feet.
“I already called the cops, just pray that Mia is okay. If anything happens to her, I will tell everyone that you’re responsible and make sure that you are locked up for it!” Kyle’s screams accompanied me as I made my way towards the stairs.
“She should never have gotten pregnant for a jerk like you!”
My legs froze and every expression drained from my face.
“Wait, what do you mean pregnant for him?” My mom’s voice rang, assuring me that I didn’t mishear.
I turned around and sprinted towards Kyle. “What are you talking about?”
Kyle’s expression dropped. “Y–you didn’t know?” His voice was a
s a lot calmer now
w but that was the
was the least of my concern.
“Mia is pregnant for you. She went to your office yesterday to tell. His voice trailed. ‘Did she not tell you?”
Cuilt and anger surged through me. My mind flashed back to Mia’s words in my office, her plea to privately speak to me. Afterward, she falled m called me several times, but I ignored them, thinking she wanted to plead some more.
Mia is pregnant for me?
“Xander?” Kyle’s voice drove me out of my thoughts. “Did she not tell you?”
“How long until the cops give us feedback?” I faced him.
“It’s not up to twenty–four hours yet so they can’t do much. Kyle’s voice was calm “From the text message, Mia said she was going to start life afresh somewhere far and I shouldn’t bother looking for her.”
That ingrate, she’s going to start afresh with your baby? My mother scoffed. Tm sure she’s up to something
I tried to think of all the possible places that Mia could have gone to but I couldn’t figure out any. The only person Mia was close with. aside from me, was Kyle.
A surge of anger coursed through me at the thought of Mia raising my child elsewhere. There was no way I would let that happen.
“How do we even know you’re the father?” My mother’s words pierced through me.
“Mia would never cheat on Xander!” Kyle was quick to defend “We all know her daily routine, and Mia loved Xander with all of her
“Well..” My mom shrugged, unconvinced “People change.”
Kyle’s words about Mia’s predictable routine were spot on, but my mother’s tone carried a subtle hint of confidence. Mia’s transparency often made her easy to read but with openly transparent individuals like her, you never truly knew what lay beneath the surface.
This time, there was only one way to find out.
Without a word, I dialed a line on my phone. It was my private investigator.
“I need you to find my wife immediately. I don’t care how busy you are, I’ll pay you twice as much. Find her and bring her to me.
