The moment my eyes fluttered open, I blinked repeatedly to shake off the dizziness that fogged my mind and to adjust to the harsh light illuminating above me.
With my senses fully awake now, I could hear the faint beeping of machines, the strong smell of antiseptic waffled into my nostrils, and the sound of muffled voices surrounded me. I winced as the cacophony of sounds made my headache.
In an instant, that ceased. Complete silence took over and then the sound of frantic footsteps followed.
“Mia?” A man stood above me, his voice laced with relief. “Thank goodness you’re awake!”
Immediately, the memories came flooding back into my head and my hands impulsively clutched my stomach.
“Xander…” I muttered, my throat parched.
Tm your doctor. You’re safe now, Mia.”
My baby?” My gaze shifted to him, a glint of hope reflecting in my eyes.
“I’m sorry, Mia. We couldn’t save them.”
Them?” My voice trailed off and I felt a stab in my chest. Twins?”
The doctor nodded and my heart dropped, a wave of guilt enveloping me. Xander! This is all Xander’s doing.
“How long have I been here!”
“Almost a month now. A good Samaritan brought you in. He was here earlier today to check up on you, but he’ll be back soon.
1 faced the other side, tears falling from my eyes as I held onto my stomach. The only family I could have possibly had was gone, too; their lives ended because of my stupid, one–sided love. The doctor left me to grieve and when the door opened an hour later, two men walked in.
The older man caught my attention first as he stared at me with so much affection and concern, he seemed familiar.
“Mia, how do you feel?”
Immediately he spoke, the familiarity kicked in.
“Mr. Walton?” My voice was low as I recalled that night. He was the one who had saved me. Him and… My gaze wandered to the younger man beside him and from his physique, I was reminded of Xander.
“Hi, Mia I’m Nathan” He smiled. “Do you feel better now?”
I nodded, my chest burning.
“I was so scared, I thought you were never going to wake up,” Mr Walton said and from his eyes, I knew that he meant it.
“Thank you for helping me, Mr. Walion.
“What happened to you?” He asked. I lowered my gaze, the memory threatening to tear a sob out of me. I glanced at Mr Walton and then at the young man behind him and I just didn’t know if I could trust them.
“Oh Nathan is my son.” Mr. Walton said, as though reading my mind. “You can trust us, Mia.”
Can I He was Xander’s business partner, and soon they would be merging their ideas to open one of the biggest ornament factories in the city.
III revealed everything to him, would he be willing to side with me against his own ally?
“Mia,” he called softly, placing a palm on my thigh. “It’s fine if you don’t want to talk about it right now, but I want you to know that we won’t hurt you
I peered into his kind face, Mr Walton has always been nice to me. It was I who had finally introduced him to Xander after a series of rejections and ended up convincing him to partner with us

yours. I’ve seen your potential, Mia, I believe you have the skill to lead Walton’s group to even greater success.”
A small smile appeared on my face watching them bicker playfully
“Dad, don’t overwhelm her with responsibility yet or you’ll scare her, Nathan cautioned. “She’s still recovering. Let’s hear what she wants first. Maybe she has other plans.”
Nathan turned to me, his eyes gentle. “Mia, what do you want? Tell me, and I’ll make it happen.”
Mr. Walton, no, my father echoed Nathan’s sentiment. Yes, Mia what is it that you desire?”
“Do you want me to bring down the orphanage that mistreated you?” Nathan asked, his voice menacing. Just one call and it’s done.”
“Revenge,” I whispered, my voice laced with venom. “I want revenge for my babies and myself. I want Alexander Schaeffer to pay for everything he did to me!”
