Chapter 18: Keeping it Chill

“Umma, Umma.”
Before I can even open my eyes, Rafe has us up on our feet in a defensive stance. I’m facing the door; I can hear my heartbeat in my head. What’s going on? Why is Jieun yelling? Who’s here? “What is it? Are you Ok? What happened?”
I hear her take a deep breath with a huff, “What are you doing?”
“Ummm… You were yelling Oh My. I thought someone was coming into the room.” My adrenaline is still pumping, and I’m frozen in place.
“No. Why you in my room?” I drop my hands. That kinda hurts. She’s my mate and doesn’t want me
in the same room.
“Remember what Gideon said. We have to help her grow new roots. Don’t be hurt just be calm.” Rafe being the ever–wise wolf always keeps me level. I take a second and put my words together carefully.
“I didn’t think it would be safe to leave you in a room alone with all that’s going on.” I turn to face her. When I do I take a step back. “Whoa, never seen that before?”
“What?” Jieun tilts her head, and she really does look more like a fox than anything with those white ears popping out of her head and those fluffy white tails behind her. That’s not something us wolves can do. You’re either a wolf or a human. You can sometimes extend claws or fangs for protection but it’s not easy you have to train to do it.
“Well… Ummm… I guess… ahhh… Your fox is showing?” I can’t help but laugh when Jieun slaps her hands on top of her head to check for her ears. Her own surprise that shè didn’t even know, was so
cute.
“Oh.” She turns her head, with her hands on her fox ears, to the surprise of her tails twitching. She
groans.
“You look cute like a squishmallow.” I chuckled. I sit on the corner of the bed.
“Squishmallow?” She put her hands in her lap. She was relaxing a little. Good, this is good.
“It’s a soft toy my nieces are obsessed with. It’s cute.” I’m smiling. This is the first silly conversation
we’ve had. It feels nice.

“I not cute.” She pouts and looks at me with a stern face and it makes me crack up.
“To me, you are very cute.” I can see she’s fighting a smile. “Why were you saying Oh My?”
“Not Oh My. Umma.” I guess it sounded the same because I was asleep.
“What does Umma mean and why were you saying it?” I lean back on my elbows on the bed. I just want to continue with this chill vibe and talk for a while.
“Umma means… means Mum.” Her head drops. Damn it I messed up. The chill vibe got sucked out of
the room in an instant.
“Roots,” Rafe yelled in my head feeling my panic.
“What do I do she looks sad,” I ask Rafe.
“Just keep going she’s not pushing you away.” OK, I’ll just keep it casual and chill like Rafe said.
“Did you have a dream about your mom?” I’m acting calm but I’m freaking out a little bit.
“Yes.” Her sad smile breaks my freaking heart.
“I hope it was a nice dream.” That sounds so dumb. What am I saying?
“It was… inter…teresting.” I don’t think she wants to talk about it. What do I change the subject to?
“Want to see my mate?” Rafe is normally patient, but I can feel his anticipation. I have really only seen her fox side and not her wolf side yet. So this might be a great topic to change to.
“What does your wolf look like? I saw you in fox form last night and half fox now, but I haven’t seen
your wolf yet.”
She just stares off for a few seconds before answering me, I wonder if she and her wolf are talking.
“Kawn is Mongolian wolf with two tails.” It was such a matter–of–fact answer that it kinda threw me
off. Wait two tails?

“Why does Kawn have two tails?” There is not one single thing about her that’s ordinary.
“I not know.” She shakes her head and again stares off for a few seconds. “Theory that wolf and fox in one not normal. Special.” She smiles slightly and nods.
“Your English is already getting better. Talking like this will help.” I grinned back at her. “You should teach me more Korean words. I just learned one today. Umma.” I chuckled. It will be fun learning her native language. If she teaches me it gives us something to do together.

“I teach you. You help me with English.” I get a genuine full smile and I feel like I’m going to pass
out.
“Come on let’s go out to the back entrance to the forest and shift.” I stood up and offered her my
hand.
Jieun doesn’t move, she just looks at my hand for a moment. I see her hand flinch and she purses her lips like she contemplating a big decision. I’m freaking out inside but I just keep smiling like an
idiot.
Knock, knock We both look to the door. “James, it’s dad are you two up?”
I drop my head and my hand. Great there goes our run I know it. “Yeah, Dad we are up.”
“Open the door so I can talk to your face and not a door.” I walk over and unlock the door.
Dad walks in and looks at Jieun sitting on the bed. “Well, that’s different. You might want to put those away for now.” Dad points to the top of his head and gestures to Jieun.
Jieun again covers her ears with her hands and groans.
“What do you need Dad?” I move the conversation along.
“You need to be ready for the meeting in a couple of hours. It’s the first day of testimony.”
“Ok, we will start getting ready now.” I really don’t want to do this right now but I don’t have a
choice.
“Not we.” Dad turns his head to look at Jieun. “I’m sorry An Jieun I need you to stay here for now. Amelie doesn’t testify till tomorrow so she and the pups will keep you company, I hope you don’t mind.” Dad smiles. It sounds like he’s asking but he’s not.
“Dad I would feel better if An Jieun was with me.” I never question Dad but this is my mate.
“Son, I know how you feel, we all feel protective of our mates but it’s too dangerous for An Jieun to be in that council room. We don’t know if Alpha Han will try and pull something. You two haven’t marked each other yet so her scent might cause confusion. Let’s not forget that coven of witches that are hunting supernaturals. We are not at home in our pack. We need to be on high alert at all times. You and your wolf, I know Rafe is, but you need to be as well son.” Dad patted me on the shoulder. “I’ll come back to help you escort An Jieun to Amilie’s room. I’ll see you in a bit An Jieun.” Dad turns and leaves.
I turn to look at Jieun and she looks deep in thought. “Jieun, are you OK with this?”
She looks at me puzzled, “How do you inter…interact with pups?”
