Chapter 118
“I am so sorry about her.” I shook my head.

Luck was on our side tonight because Aiden’s kitchen was stocked with all of the ingredients we needed to start making the red velvet cupcakes.
As I was mixing in more flour into the batter, Caroline was in the process of pouring the previous batter into the trays. The two of us were so engrossed in what we were doing, that we didn’t hear the front door open and shut.
“Scarlett?” I looked up at the sound of my name only to be met with Grace’s piercing blue eyes.
“What’s going on Grace?” Tom, Aiden’s step–dad called out from behind her.
“Hi!” I replied, stopping the stand mixer.
Fuck me.
“You must be Aiden’s parents.” Caroline smiled at them brightly.
“Yes.” Grace replied hesitantly, looking between me and Caroline, and the mess we made in her kitchen.
“I’m really sorry about your kitchen.” Caroline gestured to the mess we had made. “I promise we’ll have it all cleaned up by tomorrow morning.”
Grace exchanged a knowing look with her husband before saying, “Don’t worry about it, sweetie.”
“Just save me one, will you?” Tom laughed as he took in the mess we had made.
“We’ll just be upstairs if you need us.” Grace laughed as he ushered him away.
After Grace and Tom had left, I turned to ask Caroline. “Remind me why Brooke isn’t here?”
“She had volleyball practice after school and then a Spanish Project due tomorrow.” Caroline replied. “Otherwise she’s be here decorating cupcakes, not me!”
“You signed us up! You don’t get to complain about decorating cupcakes!” I scolded.
About an hour later, the boys had finally come back carrying loads of groceries and milkshakes. Apparently Lucas got hungry on the way back, so they stopped at Five Guys.
“Where is the food coloring?” Caroline asked frantically searching through the grocery bags.
I watched amused, sipping the chocolate milkshake Aiden had gotten me. Lucas was still munching on some fries when he replied, “Oh they didn’t have any.”
“What do you mean they didn’t have any?” She yelped. “I told you to get everything on the list!”

Chapter 118
“We looked,” Cody defended. “But they didn’t have any.”
“Where did you go grocery shopping.” She exclaimed. “Best Buy?”
I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped my lips. “It’s not funny!” Caroline shrieked. “How are we supposed to make red velvet cupcakes and red macaroons without the red dye!”
I held my hands up in surrender. “They don’t all have to be red. There’s some purple and yellow food coloring I found earlier.”
“Of course they have to be red!” She looked at me like I was crazy. “It’s Valentine’s Day!”
I glanced at the clock to see what time it was. “You’re going to have to take it or leave it Caroline. Its past eight and unless you want to go to the store yourself, you’re just going to have to be okay with purple and yellow.”
She looked like she was about to protest but once she saw my face, she finally agreed and went back to pouring the batter in the trays.
By the time all of the cupcakes had been frosted and all the macaroons had been filled, it was just past three in the morning. Cody and Lucas had passed out a while ago, while Alex had been the one to fill all of the macaroons. Meanwhile, Aiden was put in charge of cleaning up because none of us trusted him to go near the actual pastries.
I had called my mom earlier to let her know I was sleeping over at Aiden’s because of the bake sale, and she surprisingly didn’t question it. It probably helped that she heard Caroline yelling at me to get off the phone and back to baking, but you can never know with my mother. Her trust in Aiden is quite unhealthy, if you ask me.
After all of the pastries had been stored in Aiden’s garage, he had to drag me up the stairs because I was ready to pass out on the kitchen floor from how tired I was. The last thing I remember before my head hit the pillow and I fell asleep, was changing into a pair of Aiden’s boxers and shirt.
When I woke up the next morning, the first thing I noticed was that the bed was empty. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I slowly stood up and saw that there was a bouquet of red roses on Aiden’s side of the bed.
Confused, I took the note that was attached to it and read it.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Princess.
My heart began beating ten times its normal speed as I re–read the card.
Damn these feeling and emotions.
I eventually got my beating heart to calm down long enough to go to the bathroom and do my business. I found a spare tooth brush on the sink when I walked in, which I was extremely thankful because morning breath
Just as I walked out of the bathroom, Aiden walked back into his room – completely dressed and ready for the day, holding two cups of coffee and an almond croissant.
