Chapter 139
“Today is um… the anniversary of her passing.” He cleared his throat. “I know it was a long
time ago but… it’s still a shit day.”
“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to, Lucas…”
“It’s okay… I- I want to…”
“She had ovarian cancer.” He continued. “The doctors tried all sorts of experimental
treatments but eventually it just… it just became too much. It spread to all of her organs and she just… one day she was here and the next… she… she was just gone…”
I didn’t realize there were tears streaming down my face until one landed on my hand. I tried to blink them away before he saw me, but it was too late. As if on cue, the tears started coming down harder and my vision blurred. “You don’t have to cry, Buttercup.”
“I know… I I… just.. I’m so sorry Lucas!” I sniffled as I buried my face in his shoulder.
Why am I like this?
I was the one that was supposed to be comforting him… not the other way around.
Great job, Scarlett!
Searching through the kitchen cabinets for anything resembling breakfast, I let out a frustrated groan as I closed another cabinet door.
Where are the Poptarts?
The Oreos?
Anything?
I had moved onto the fridge, hoping to find some frozen waffles I could just pop into the toaster but no such luck. When my phone pinged loudly on the counter, I rolled my eyes and glanced at the digital clock on the microwave.
7:03 am – right on time.

Aiden: Are you ready?
Knowing I had about five minutes before Mr. Impatient came up and lectured me about punctuality, I bent down to slip my shoes on.
Buzz! Buzz!
Aiden: I guess I’ll just enjoy this iced caramel macchiato myself.
I quickly typed a reply before grabbing my backpack off the floor and locking the door
behind me.
For about a week or so now, Aiden has been picking me up for school almost every day. Although he was annoying as hell in the morning, the simple gesture did wonders for my
road rage.
Scarlett: Don’t. You. Dare.
Scarlett: Hands off the coffee, Mr.
Aiden: Then hurry up ?
Stepping outside into the warm sun, I spotted Aiden’s car parked right in front of my
building. Throwing my stuff in the back, I got in and a smile broke across my face.
My precious coffee was still intact!
Picking up the iced drink, I inhaled sweet caramelized and nutty aroma that filled the air.
Taking a sip, I melted at the taste of it–caramelly with notes of dark roast and vanilla syrup.
“Morning, Princess.” Aiden leaned across his seat and planted a quick peck on my cheek before shifting the car into drive and pulling out of the parking spot.
I shot him a glare. “I don’t appreciate being rushed.”
“You don’t appreciate being late either.” He fired back turning onto the main street.
I mean – he did have a point but I wasn’t about to tell him that.
Just because he was my boyfriend now, didn’t mean I was all of a sudden going to be nice to

him. I have to make sure to keep him on his toes.
Speaking of which this morning I decided I was going to test how much Aiden valued our newfound relationship status. Shifting in my seat so that I was facing him, I flashed him a bright smile. “So… since I’m your girlfriend now, will you let me drive your car?”
“No.” He replied without hesitation, not even sparing a glance in
my
direction.
“But Aiden!”
“No.”
“Pretty pleaseeee”
“Nope.”
“You’re no fun.” I pouted placing my coffee in the cup holder. “Pleaseeeeee.”
I may not know a lot about cars, but Aiden’s car was sexy. It was one of the newer models and in pristine condition. It was literally his baby.
For god’s sake, he didn’t even let me eat inside!
“I’ll show you what Caroline and I bought last weekend when we went shopping. “I said, bringing my face close to his and planting a lingering kiss on his cheek.
He turned his head slightly and narrowed his gaze at me. “You’re evil.”
Shrugging, I went back to nursing my coffee – knowing we were minutes away from hell.
“I’ll tell you what,” Aiden bit his lip, attempting to suppress a smile. “I’ll let you drive my car if you wear my jersey tonight.”
I felt my cheeks heat up.
I’m not an idiot – I know what that means.
Having missed Aiden’s first two games of the season because of doctor’s appointments, tonight would be my first time seeing him play and I was excited. It’s no secret I enjoyed watching the sport much more than playing. Add in the fact that I got to watch Aiden run

around in shorts and a tight jersey, how could I possibly resist.
I narrowed my eyes at him as he flashed me an innocent smile. “Deal.” I smirked when his
eyebrows shot up in surprise.
He didn’t actually think I was going to say yes. Ha – serves him right for underestimating
me!
