Chapter 140
Walking towards the large building with Aiden’s arm wrapped around my shoulder, I rolled my eyes at the large portion of the student body that continued to ogle at us like we were
famous.
It was the most infuriating thing ever.
It never ceases to amaze me just how curious and nosy high school students were. Two people start displaying signs of affection towards one another, and all of a sudden they were the talk of the school. Have they never seen two people touch before? Is it really that mind–blowing?
Of course Aiden and I had been unusually close all year, but when we made our relationship public it was all the school was talking about. Although there had been ongoing whispers and pointedly staring all day, Veronica was the first to actually approach me during the start of sixth period. She made a point of making it perfectly clear that I needed to get my grubby little hands off Aiden because no one like him will ever look at someone like me for too long.
Then there was the whole incident after school…
I stood by Aiden and Lucas’s locker with a sour look on my face. Aiden had picked me up in the morning, and I was waiting for Caroline to show up so she could drive me home.
The day had been emotionally draining and it didn’t look like it was about to get any better when I saw Leo strutting up towards us with some of his football buddies. “Are you going to give Cooper the same VIP treatment I got, Scarlett?” He and the rest of his buddies laughed.
The sound of Leo’s voice got both Lucas and Aiden’s attention.
Taking a deep breath, I plastered the biggest smile on my face. “You didn’t get the VIP treatment, you got the sleezy douche–bag treatment.”
His face fell for a brief second before he recovered and he turned towards Aiden with a smirk. “Run while you still can. Trust me you’ll get bored eventually. She’s nothing special.”

My face fell and before I had time to react, Aiden had pushed Leo against lockers and his face was dangerously stoic. “I fucked up your face once,” Aiden held his gaze. “Don’t make me do it again.”
Leo smirked. “You wouldn’t hurt me in front of your precious girlfriend.”
“You wanna bet?”
“Aiden,” I pleaded as I grabbed his arm which had a strong hold on Leo. “Let him go.”
“Yeah – listen to her Aiden.” Leo continued to mock. To my surprise, Aiden had let go of him and stepped back. Just when I thought he was going to be the bigger person and walk away, he swung his right arm out and his fist collided with Leo’s face. Aiden then proceeded to grab him by the collar and stare him dead in the eye. “If you ever breath another word about her ever again, or so much as even think about her remember she won’t be here to
hold me back next time.
“Now fuck off.” Aiden spat as he grabbed his duffle bag off the ground and took my hand in his, leading us away from Leo and his so called friends.
Aiden had more than once asked me if I was sure that I was okay with receiving this type of attention. Of course I wasn’t – but there was nothing he or I could do about it. People were
bound to be nosy, and eventually they would grow tired of us and move on to the next
drama.
It would be a waste of effort on my part if I engaged everyone.
I spent the past four years caring about what everyone else thought, trying to be invisible
and not attract the wrong attention. For once, it was time to finally do something that would
make me happy – screw what everyone else thought about it.
It was time to be selfish.
For me, high school was going to be over in less than three months and I was never going to look back on my time here. Sure it taught me some valuable lessons like being my own person and challenging myself to try new things, but I know that at the end of the day, I’m not going to have any trouble moving on. It’ll be harder for people like Veronica and Leo who use high school to build themselves up and make themselves feel special by bringing other people down. One day those people are going to find out that the real world doesn’t care so much about who you were in high school, but how you’re able to mature.

As Aiden and I parted ways at my locker, he gave me a reassuring smile and walked in the opposite direction.
I appreciated him willing to stick up for me, but he won’t always be there to fight my battles
for me. I’m a big girl and I can’t take care of myself.
After school, I was helping Caroline braid her hair into a French braid when Aiden and Lúcas made their way towards us. “Catch!” Aiden smirked as he threw a white jersey at me. With one hand still in Caroline’s hair, my other reached out and caught the thin material
before it landed on the floor.
