Chapter 141
“Can’t you see she’s trying to do my hair?” Caroline growled.
“Relax babe,” Lucas kneeled down to her level. “You always look amazing.”
Lucas was very much back to his old self, but I think it’s safe to say he and I now have a new shared connection. He made me swear not to tell anyone about his mom – not even Caroline – and I reluctantly agreed. I was dying to tell her because she’s my best friend, but this wasn’t my secret to tell. The only other person Lucas had told was Aiden, and the two of them had been best friends since first grade.
I wasn’t expecting him to open up to me that day, but the fact that he did made me realize just how much our friendship had grown.
“And this is why you’re still single.” Caroline pushed him away from her and he fell back on the ground playfully clutching his heart.
Unfortunately Caroline had to leave at the same time Lucas and Aiden did because she was
cheering during their game. Brooke had promised to meet up with me after she picked up a book from the library, but she was nowhere to be seen.
On a mission to find her, I walked towards the library where I found her hunched over a
stack of books.
“What is taking you so long?” I demanded.
“This history paper will literally be the end of me!” She groaned in frustration. “How the
fuck am I supposed to come up with thirty pages on the Russian Revolution.”
“You can do it.” I patted her arm sympathetically. Mrs. O’Conner expected nothing short of perfection on this research paper, and she wasn’t afraid to send your paper back to you ten times with revisions if necessary.
How do I know? Because that’s what she did to me. I know she means well, but sometimes I think she forgets she’s dealing with seniors who have hit that point in their academic career where senioritis is definitely present.

“I still need five more primary sources.” She glared first at me, and then at the stack of
books in front of her.
Setting my backpack on the chair next to hers, I pulled her towards the history section where we spend the next hour and a half scanning through books that she could use. Eventually we got everything she needed, and after a short trip to her car, we finally made
our way towards the packed stadium.
The boys were already on the field warming up, and I spotted Caroline not too far from
where Coach Johnson was yelling and frantically waving his hands around – warming up
with the rest of the cheerleaders.
The bleachers had been divided into two sections – one for the home team and one for the
opposing team. Although based on the amount of maroon and white present, it was clear
our home team had the advantage.
We were playing Senn High School today, and as far as I know, they were pretty good.
Despite there being quite a turn out, Brooke and I managed to squeeze our way to an empty section in the front row.
“Nice jersey.” She smirked, eying me curiously once we had settled into our seats on the
bleachers directly above our team’s bench.
“Thanks.” I mumbled refusing to look her in the eye.
“It’s cute!” She nudged me. “I didn’t think I’d see the day you actually got a boyfriend and
did all the cliché stuff.“.
I cock my head to the side and sigh out, “He’s… he’s different.”
“You deserve to be happy Scarlett.”
“I am happy.”
“Good.” Brooke smiled as she pulled out a box of double–stuffed Oreos from her bag. Heads turned as she opened the sealed packaging, and I couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the odd stares people threw at her.
“You want some?” She shoved the pack in my face, completely unbothered.

“Always.” I replied picking up and cookie and bringing it to my lips to take a bite.
I will never turn down Oreos.
Glancing around the field, I spotted Aiden and Lucas at the front. The two of them played forwards, with Cody playing midfield and Alex on defense. As soon as the referee blew his whistle, it didn’t take long for Aiden to steal possession from the other team and make a
pass to Lucas.
The two of them made quite the unstoppable pair.
I was still mulling over how effective Lucas’s passes to Aiden were when someone tapped
me on the shoulder. Confused, I turned around to face a smiling raven haired girl. “You’re Aiden’s girlfriend, right?”
“Um… yes.” I replied. She flashed me genuine smile before turning to her pink haired friend
and saying, “See – I told you that was her!”
I shot the two of them a questioning look. The pink haired girl chuckled before replying,
“We’re freshmen. I’m Mia and this is my creepy best friend Daisy.” She pointed to the raven
haired girl that had tapped me on the shoulder. “The two of us played Junior Varsity this year and Aiden came to some of our games.”
“We saw you wearing his jersey and thought you looked familiar.” Daisy flashed me a
bright smile. “We just wanted to say that Aiden is really nice and not like the other varsity players. Even though we totally fucked up during our game, he gave up pointers on how to improve.”
