Chapter 146
Yet here we are.
I let out a loud sigh as I settled into my seat in first period – I am too tired for this.
We were officially less than two weeks away from AP exams and I was freaking the fuck
out! With all the time I spent out of school recovering, I had quite a bit of catching up to do
when it came to school work. Throw in the never ending dread looming in the back of my
head that AP exams were right around the corner and I did not feel prepared at all, it’s no wonder I was having trouble sleeping at night.
At this point, all we were doing in school was reviewing. You would think that would be the
easy part, but when Mrs. O’Conner starts to go over the Italian Revolution and you have no
idea what she’s talking about – I’m pretty sure you would freak out as well!
Luckily today was Friday and I could spend the next todays skimming through the thick
history textbook attempting to memorize as much of it as possible.
That, or I could sit alone in my room and cry over the textbook – either or works at this
point.
I was pulling out of the parking lot after school when my phone started ringing. Quickly glancing down at my phone, I saw it was an unknown caller.
Not this again.
The last time I picked up, I ended up in the hospital for about a week.
I debated not answering, but curiosity got the best of me. What does he want now? A fucking kidney? My heart?
“Hello?” I answered, putting the phone on speaker.
“Hi Scarlett.” Came an uncertain voice that sounded very familiar. “It’s um… Anthony.”
“Anthony?” I was genuinely shocked and curious to see why he was calling me. “Is my mom

okay?”
“Yes, yes she’s fine!” He reassured me. “I was just wondering if you’re busy tonight. There’s something I want to talk to you about…”
What the hell could he want to talk to me about?
Don’t get me wrong, the handful of times I have interacted with Anthony he’s been great. I just find it a bit strange he would all of a sudden call me up to see what I was doing tonight. Curiosity got the best of me and I finally replied, “Sure.”
“Great!” He sounded relieved. “How does sushi sound?”
“That’s fine.”
“Great – see you later, Scarlett!”
After I hung up, I kept my attention focused on the road while quietly drumming my fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the music blasting through the speakers.
Sometimes, you just need loud music so the thoughts in your head sit at a standstill.
When I finally got home, Anthony had already texted me the address and said he made reservations for 7pm. I spent the next couple of hours working on my French project until it was time to get ready and leave. After a quick shower and an outfit change, I got in my car and put the address in the GPS. The place wasn’t far, and it only took me about twenty minutes to get there.
After struggling to find parking, I finally walked up to the entrance where they was a large sign flashing Sushi Tokoro. I had hear about this place, it was supposed to be really good.
When I walked in, I immediately spotted Anthony sitting at a table by the window fidgeting with the menu and rearranging the table arrangement.
“Scarlett.” His knee bumped the edge of the table loudly, attracting the attention of the other customers nearby. I motioned for him to not get up as I took a seat across from him. “Well–what’s going on.”

“Right,” He sat up straighter as he placed his hands on the table. “I wanted to talk to you about your mother.”
“Okay…” I quirked an eyebrow.
“Your mother and I… we’ve been seeing each other for quite some time and she’s really special to me.” He chuckled nervously. “In fact, she’s more than special. She’s phenomenal and I can’t imagine my life without her.”
I couldn’t help but smile. That’s actually really sweet.
“Your mother doesn’t know I invited you to dinner tonight,” He continued as he unfolded and refolded his napkin for the fifth time in a row. “So please don’t tell her where you are.”
Now that got my attention.
I was about to ask him why when the waitress came to take our order.
“What can I get you two?” She asked, her eyes lingering on Anthony a little too long as she
flashed him a smile.
Is she serious? He’s like fifty.
“I will have the Dragon Roll and the California Roll.” I said drawing her attention to me. The fact that her smile disappeared and turned into a sneer when she turned to me, didn’t go unnoticed.
“And I’ll have the Sunny Roll and the California Roll.” Anthony smiled politely handing her back our menus.
Once she was gone, he turned his attention back to me and gave me a weak smile. “This went a lot smoother in my head.”
“Anthony,” I interjected, trying to keep from laughing. “Full sentences would be best.”
