Chapter 150
It’s a very… controversial novel that was published in the 1950’s by an Russian–American novelist. For some time, the book was actually black–listed and not allowed to be taught in school. It’s basically a love story about a middle aged man that becomes infatuated with a twelve year old girl and constructs an elaborate plot to seduce her, but first he must get rid
of her mother.
Of course the book isn’t as straight forward as that, but I’ll spare you all the gory details.
“The power of language is one of the most important themes in the novel.” Ms. Nguyen droned on as she turned her back to the class and began scribbling some stuff on the
whiteboard. “Using language and words, Humbert seduces his readers as fully and slyly as
he seduces Lolita herself. Words are his power, and he uses them to distract, confuse, and
charm. He is a pedophile and a murderer, but he builds up elaborate defenses and
explanations for his actions, and his language shields him from judgment.”
“I cannot believe we actually read this book.” Caroline leaned in to whisper so that Ms.
Nguyen would not hear her.
Honestly, neither can I. Don’t get me wrong, the literature itself if beautifully written but at the end of the day, the main character is still a pedophile who uses a young girl’s insecurities and loss to lure her in. Not that you can really blame her for falling for Humbert’s trap – at the end of the day, we all just want someone to love us for who we are.
We want that blanket of security that comes in the form of another person.
The rest of the day went by in a blur.
With exams officially starting tomorrow, all athletes had been excused from practice which meant that Aiden and Lucas were free to suffer with the rest of us after school as we
poured over our Calculus notes.
“No more, please.” Caroline begged.
Aiden was going over the basic riles of differential calculus, and Caroline looked like she was about to burst into tears at any point now – with me not too far behind.

Why is it that when Mr. Evans explained it to us it didn’t sound like a foreign language? During class, I felt remotely confident about what I was doing. However, now that I’m staring at these practice problems, banging my head against the wall and ripping my own
hair out sounds more fun.
“We need a break.” Brooke declared as she stood up off the floor. “Who wants pizza?”
Yeah, we were on the floor again – with the exception of Aiden and Lucas.
“We don’t need more food.” I snapped. “We need more study time. There is not enough time for me to memorize all of this. Oh my god what if I fail? What if I open the exam and off a
sudden draw a blank and th – ”
–
“We definitely need pizza.” Lucas tried to stifle a laugh which only resulted me throwing a pillow at his head. My aim had gotten significantly better since I’ve been hanging out
around him, but not good enough to actually do any damage.
“As much as I hate to agree with Lucas,” Aiden rolled his eyes. “He’s right, babe.”
I have spent every waking moment studying for the past three weeks, and he was not about
to ruin the most crucial twelve hours of my studying.
“What we need, is coffee” I gritted out, opening my history textbook next. “Aiden go make
us some coffee.”
Seven exams in total.
Two exams per day.
Four days of torture.
When Aiden rolled off his bed and landed on his feet, I didn’t think much of it until he stood in front of me and grabbed my hand to pull me off the floor and away from Stalin and Mussolini. “Come on, let’s go?”
“What are you – “I spluttered trying to yank my arm free. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“We’re taking a break.” He continued to tug on my arm while he grabbed his phone and
wallet. “We’ll be back in an hour or so.” He shouted over his shoulder to the rest of the
group who all looked at us amused.

“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” Lucas shouted.
“Aiden – whatever your middle name is – Cooper!” I hissed as I grounded my feet near the staircase. “Stop this nonsense right now! We need to study, not whatever the fuck you have
planned going on in that crazy head of yours.”
Aiden appeared to be contemplating my words, and just when I think I got through to him, an involuntary yelp escaped my lips as I’m lifted off the ground and thrown over his
shoulder.
“AIDEN.” I shrieked. “PUT ME DOWN RIGHT THIS INSTANT.”
As he continued to descent down the stairs, I couldn’t help but admire his backside. All
those late night practices were clearly paying off.
“Is everything okay out here?” Grace popped her head out of her home office on the ground
floor.
“We’re good mom.” Aiden replied as if I wasn’t making any noise or desperately trying to be put down. “We’re just taking a much needed break from studying.”
