Chapter 154
With that I yanked Mr. Newman’s door shut behind me and quickly exited the main office
before I said what was really on my mind.
This day certain took a turn for the worst.
This is the most fucked up thing I have ever heard. It’s not like Ella herself selects the applicants – I’m pretty sure she has a financial planner for that! And from what I heard, the school’s administration determines who makes the shortlist before its sent out to the sponsors. The least they could do is let me apply to see if I even have a chance of winning it, after all there are more than five hundred seniors!
“Scarlett!”
And the worst part, the school board didn’t even give me a.chance to defend myself or the situation. It’s like they all decided to meet behind my back and discuss my sex life without
so much as letting me know!
Who the fuck just does that!
I’d also like to know who the asshole – or assholes are that said it wouldn’t be fair. I’d like
to give them a fair piece of my mind.
“Scarlett wait!”
My legs had a mind of their own and it wasn’t until I stepped outside and the wind was gushing thorough my hair, that I realized I had left school in the middle of the day. It wouldn’t be the first time this year, but it was the first time I was doing it on my own
without anyone coaxing me.
Stupid bureaucratic system, I thought bitterly.
I finally stopped in front of my car, and began digging through my backpack for the keys when someone tapped my shoulder gently. Whipping my head around, I was about to give the person a piece of my mind about personal space when my eyes landed on Naomi.
“Naomi?”

“Girl! Where is… the fire?” She asked as she placed a hand on her hip. She was also clearly
out of breath for some reason. “Are you okay?” She asked when she saw my face.
“I couldn’t be better!” I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
She quirked a knowing eyebrow at me, letting me know that she wasn’t buying my shit for
one second. “What’s going on? I saw you storm out of the office and I tried calling your
name, but you wouldn’t stop.”
“Just Northside’s usual bullshit.” I shook my head as I threw my backpack in the backseat and slammed the door shut. It’s like God knew today just wasn’t going to be my day. Aiden usually picks me up in the morning, but he had an early morning practice today since
they’ve made it into the state quarterfinals. “I just… I just had to get out of there before I
said something I would regret.‘
“I know just the thing to make you feel better.” She flashed me a small smirk and began
walking around to the passenger’s side of my car.
“Don’t you have school?” I asked stupidly as I watched her open the door and
“Yeah,” She laughed bucking her seatbelt. “But so do you.”
Can’t argue with that.

It has been months since I’ve hung out with Naomi, but that’s not uncommon. Usually the
two of us spend a lot of time together during the soccer season and we’ll talk on occasion
during the rest of the school year. It’s what happens when one of us is a senior and the
other is a junior.
However, days like these remind me that I don’t need to see her every day or talk to her every day to know that she’ll always be there for me if I need her. We spent the entire car ride catching up – only stopping our gossiping when she told me where to turn, or to give the Starbucks employee our order at the drive thru.
Thirty minutes later, I finally pulled into a parking lot by beach and parked. Taking the key out of the ignition, I turned in my seat to look at Naomi. “What now?”
“Now we go sit on the sand, and drink our iced coffee.” She replied like it was the most

obvious thing in the world, before exiting the car.
“But “I ran to catch up with her, making sure to lock my car first. “I’m not dressed for the
beach!”
Granted, it wasn’t bikini weather and I wouldn’t be stripping my clothes to get a tan, but I
didn’t have the right shoes on and sand gets everywhere! “Live a little.” Naomi replied over
her shoulder.
Once we did reach the sand, I made her stop so that I could take my shoes and socks off.
Once my feet hit the warm sand, I felt the heat and tiny grains of sand tickle the bottom of
my foot. The beach was almost empty with the exception of a few people here and there.
And although you could hear the waves crashing in the distance, there was an overall sense
of calm.
The two of us walked around aimlessly for a bit before Naomi finally settled on a spot. It
was right near the water, and if a big wave crashed into the shore, it would definitely get
our feet wet.
