Chapter 155
When I sat down on the hot sand and saw Naomi typing on her phone, I realized I left mine in the car. Oh well- I don’t feel like dealing with anyone right now, anyway.
“You wanna tell me what happened at school?” Naomi finally broke the silence, placing her
phone in her lap.
Not taking my eyes off the deep blue water, I finally replied, “Mr. Newman informed me that I won’t be able to apply for the Taylor Scholarship.”
“What?” She shrieked. “Why the fuck not?”
“Because Aiden’s sister sponsors the scholarship. The school board felt it wouldn’t be fair for me to apply given my relationship with him.”
“This is a joke, right?” She asked, disbelief laced in her voice.
“Nope.”
“That’s not fair! They can’t do that!”
“Apparently they can.”
“No! Who the fuck do they think they are? We’re gonna call th –”
“Naomi –” I cut her off, finally turning to look at her. Her once calm exterior was gone, and
instead her brows were furrowed in confusion and a clear look of irritation had made its
way onto her face. “What’s done is done.”
“But… But you can’t give up!” She spluttered. “You’ve worked so hard Scarlett!”
“Even if there was some way around the board’s decision and I somehow managed to apply and was one of the five winners, people would still think that I only got picked because of Aiden.” I let out an exasperated sigh.
The anger I felt earlier, I disappeared and was replaced by an overall sense of disappointment. My entire academic career had been catered to a few things – college, valedictorian, and scholarship. The college thing worked out well in the end, but the

scholarship just went down and I’m pretty sure so did my chances of being valedictorian
but I wasn’t too upset about that.
Some people were just naturally smart, while the rest of us had to put in an insane amount of work to catch up. If this year has taught me anything, it’s to expect the unexpected and
not take life for granted. I almost died, for fucks sake! I played off the anaphylaxis in front
of everyone because I didn’t want to worry them, but there was a very good chance that I would not have woken up from surgery.
Since then, I’ve been spending a little less time worrying about the future, and more time in the present.
“Screw what people thing. Who the fuck cares!” Naomi raised her voice, clearly not
believing the words coming out of my mouth.
“I care.” I shrugged. “This obviously puts a bump in my plans for college, but there are
other scholarships I can apply for. There are also student loans.”
Sometimes, life just really isn’t fair and there’s nothing you‘ can do about it except move on.
“You’re too… too calm!” She shook her head in disbelief.
“I was angry when I first found out, but the drive here made me realize that being angry and throwing a tantrum isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. In fact, it’ll only make the situation worse.” Although Naomi didn’t look too happy at my words, she nevertheless
dropped the subject and we both returned our attention back to the water.
Once the sun had begun to set over Lake Michigan, Naomi and I finally got up from our spot on the sand and made our way back to the car. Both of us were starving, so before I dropped her off at home we stopped at the Chick–Fil–A to get some food.
We sat in my car in the parking lot with the window’s open just laughing about stupid stuff and eating our food. What had turned into a shit–show of a day, turned out okay in the end.
It wasn’t until I finally got home, showered and changed that I finally took my phone out of
my bag. I’m not surprised that there are three missed calls and five texts from Aiden, with
another twenty from Brooke and Caroline,
Aiden: Where are you? Caroline said you went to the office.

Aiden: Babe?
Aiden: Are you okay? You’re starting to worry me…
Aiden: Never mind (insert eye roll emoji) Naomi texted me.
Aiden: Just let me know when you get home please.
It was my turn to roll my eyes. Of course Naomi texted him.
Honesty, who the fuck doesn’t have his phone number.
Shooting him a quick reply, I placed my phone next to me and picked up the TV remote. I hadn’t even finished logging into my Netflix when my phone buzzed.
Aiden: Do you want to talk about it?
Scarlett: No.
Aiden: Do you want cookies?
Scarlett: Yes.
I didn’t need him to text me back to know without a doubt that he would be at my door in
no more than thirty minutes.
Mom had gone out of town with Anthony for the remainder of the week, which is the only
reason that I’m letting Aiden come over this late. Apparently, the two of them were flying
out to New York to see how the new office is running, and Anthony had a romantic
weekend planned for the two of them afterwards.
