Chapter 161
“I heard what you said!” She snapped. “But you can’t be serious.”
“Why don’t you want to go?” Aiden asked from next to me.
“Because she’s clearly lost her mind.” Caroline scoffed, continuing to glare at me from
across the table.
“I for one,” Brooke smirked. “Support Scarlett’s decision one hundred percent.”
“Oh here we go!” Caroline threw her hands up. She looked like she was close to leaping
across the table to strangle Brooke and I.
“I’m not going because I don’t want anything to do with this biased and preferential school
administration.” I stated. “Plus, it’s six hours of being surrounded by people I quite frankly
do not like,”
I’ve never been a fan of school – in fact, after third grade I began to develop a very strong
dislike towards school that lasted until now. Following the incident with Mr. Newman, it’s
like something in my brain snapped and made that already strong dislike develop into a
sort of hatred.
I mean, what the fuck was the point of working so hard only to have it basically thrown in
your face?
I’ve been half–assing all of my assignment since then, and I was okay with that.
I’ve also never been one of those girls who is obsessed with prom. It was always something
I thought I’d attend, but then again I also thought I had the Taylor Scholarship fund in the
bag.
Looks like things always have a way of surprising you.
“I’m offended, Buttercup.” Lucas chimed in from where he was sandwiched in between
Brooke and Caroline. “I thought I was your favorite person at this school.”
“Keep dreaming.” Aiden snorted.

“The first step towards acceptance, is denial.” Lucas continued to egg him on.
“No” Aiden glared at him. “The first step will be my foot up your ass.”
“Is that jealousy I see, Aiden?” Brooke smirked.
“It’s not a good look babe.” I nudged him playfully, looking up at him only to be met with
his piercing gray eyes already on mine.
“Can we get back to the real problem at hand?” Caroline cut in. “You can’t just abandon us
at prom Scarlett!”
“Aiden, talk some sense into her!” She continued to plead.
“I’m okay with whatever Scarlett wants to do.” He shrugged.
“I’m with Nat on this.” Brooke chimed in. “It’s her decision, and one I’m going to follow suit
on.” My head snapped up in her direction, shooting her a look asking if she was serious. She just nodded and shrugged, and went back to eating her pasta.
Caroline on the other hand, wan’t about to hold back on how she feels. “You… you can’t just –” She spluttered. “You guys can’t do this to me!”
“Do you like it?”
“I love it.” I smiled staring back at my reflection in the large mirror. My once mid–back dark brown hair was now a shoulder length medium balayage blonde.
“You look so cute!” Caroline squealed from her seat in the chair next to me.
“Thank you Mrs. Finley.” I said as I took off the black nylon cape and placed it on the back of the chair.
Prom was tonight, and although I had not changed my mind about going – despite Caroline’s consistent pleas over the past two weeks I did decide it was time for a change.
I agreed to help Caroline get ready for tonight, and our first stop was her mom’s hair salon
so she could get her roots touched up. When Mrs. Finley asked me if I wanted to get

anything done, I impulsively said yes. I’ve been toying around with the idea of changing up my hair for a while, and today I was feeling brave.
After Caroline’s mom finished her hair, the two of us walked back to my car. “What’s next?”
I asked.
“We have time to eat lunch.” She replied, buckling her seatbelt. “My hair and make–up lady is coming at three.”
“Oh good.” I nodded sarcastically. “I was worried we wouldn’t have enough time to make
you pretty.” She threw me a dirty look as she continued to examine herself in the car vanity
mirror.
Despite being an outright diva the past two weeks, Caroline didn’t need to fuss to look her
best she had a natural beauty to her that didn’t require a lot of effort.
Lucas had also waited until the last minute to formally ask Caroline to prom which had her
even more on edge.
It wasn’t until last week that Lucas had asked her to prom in the most Lucas way possible –
by dressing up as Elsa after school one day and waiting for her in the parking lot with a sign
that read: Caroline, you’re worth melting for. Don’t leave me frozen. Prom?
I nearly died of laughter when I saw him, and when Aiden started playing the Frozen theme song on a portable speaker, I could barely breath.
Caroline on the other hand, looked absolutely mortified, but her smile gave her away.
After lunch, I spent the rest of the day with Caroline until Lucas came to pick her up.
Clasping her layered bobble chain gold necklace, I stepped back and looked at her. “You’re
all set.”
