Chapter 166
“Hi.” Mia shyly waved before burying her face in my shoulder.
While everyone continued to coo over how adorable Mia is, Ella and I got to talking. The end of the school year had been busier than I anticipated, and I hadn’t seen her in a while.
When I felt a pair of arms snake around my waist and settle on my lower back, I glanced up
only to be met with a familiar pair of piercing gray eyes.
“I was wondering where you two had run off to.” Aiden shook his head while Ella just shrugged.
“Un–cle Aid–en!” Mia glanced up at him. “Mommy said you’ve been hog–hog–ging Natty up
and that’s why she hasn’t been coming over as much.”
“Mommy likes to exaggerate.” Aiden rolled his eyes.
“Mommy is right here and doesn’t appreciate being talked about in the third person.” Ella
playfully narrowed her eyes in slits at Aiden. Then she turned to me, “Do you see the kind
of disrespect I have to put up with?”
“You’ll live!” Aiden fired back before returning his attention to me. “Can I borrow you for a
minute?” Leaning down, his lips grazed my ear. I nodded, setting Mia back on the ground
and allowing his to lead me away from the group.
“Where are we going?” I asked confused. We were walking in the opposite direction of the
auditorium.
“You ask too many questions.” He shook his head, not turning to look at me as we stepped
outside into the warm and mild afternoon sun.
“I have to.” I smirked, although he couldn’t see me, “A perk of being your girlfriend.”
“I like that.”
“What.”
“You being my girlfriend.”

Chapter 166
By now, Aiden had stopped walking and we were standing on the sideline of an all too
familiar field.
The two nets on opposite sides of the field – each goal worn from age and the countless shots that have been taken on it over the years. The grass was neatly trimmed and the goal lines freshly painted. The once packed bleachers surrounding the field stood empty – the
cold silver ledges shining brightly under the balmy June sun.
Aiden finally let go of my hand, leaving me more confused than ever.
“Catch, Princess.” My head snapped in his direction just in time to see him scoop down to
grab a soccer ball off the ground and throw it in my direction. Instinctively, my arms
reached out and the ball nestled its way into my hands before it hit me or fell to the ground.
“I thought it would be fitting to say this where it all started last year.” Aiden smirked, slowly
approaching me.
“Say what?” My brows furrowed together in confusion as he reached for my hands.
“I love you, Princess.” He stared down at me, trying to gauge my reaction. “I am so madly in love with you, and I think I have been for a while.” He continued to scan my face, nervously biting his lower lip. “Babe?”
“Say something. Even if it’s just to tell me I’m an idiot.” He pleaded, tightly grasping my
hands.
“I love you too!” I blurted out.
His eyes ogled out of their sockets at the same time that mine did.
Did I really just say that out loud?
I’ve never been in love before, so I don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like. But I do know, that if I’m willing to explore this strange concept of love with anyone – it’s going to be with Aiden.
“You… you d
He didn’t get to finish his rambling before I pushed myself on my tiptoes and planted my lips on his. “I love you, dork.” I whispered against his lips.

Chapter 166
Looking back on it now, this is where is had all began unfolding right here on this field.
Aiden wasted no time capturing my lips with his and kissing me slowly. When I felt his tongue graze against my lower lip, I immediately parted my lips and allowed him entrance. With every second that passed, my entire body was set on fire.
Aiden’s hands continued to brush against my waist and rub soothing circles on my lower back. Pulling back for air I said, “We should head back before they send a search party.”
“Let them.” He replied, pressing light feather kiss on my cheek and slowly trailing down
towards my neck.
It was hard to stay focused on the task at hand with his lips moving across my exposed skin with such agonizing restraint. He was teasing me and stirring parts of my body that he had become a master at awakening, all while in the process of putting a complete halt to all the
blood flow entering and leaving my heart.
[Three years later]
Love – it’s such a strange concept.
It’s difficult to understand, difficult to explain, and even more difficult to measure. But,
when you do fall in love – you fall hard and all at once.
At least I did.
For about a year and a half, everything was great for Aiden and I. Well – as great as it can
for two people on opposite sides of the country who only saw each other three or four times
a year.
I like to think that I saw Aiden as being the one, but ultimately things didn’t work out the way I expected them to.
At first it was the canceled trips, the missed FaceTime calls, and then the rare texts. It got to the point where we’d go days/without talking, and that just didn’t feel like a relationship anymore. We tried fooling ourselves that we could make it work for as long as possible, but in the end we both decided to just call it quits and stop stringing one another along.
There were no harsh words, no fighting – just a mutually agreed upon breakup.

Chapter 166
The summer after senior year of high school, I spent every waking moment with either
Brooke, Caroline, Lucas or Aiden.
The five us were practically inseparable.
And Aiden – well he was perfect. He was still cocky and arrogant as fuck, but he was a true gentleman and made me feel what no other boy had made me feel.
At the end of the day, all any of us want is to feel is special – and Aiden did that for me. Every time I was around him, I felt like the center of the world. He made me feel what no
one else had, and showed me what adventure was like.
As much as I hate to admit it, Aiden made me feel like a real life princess. What was once a
pesky nickname turned out to be so much more. He showed me what it was like to be
unconditionally loved, and every time I was around him it was like I was the center of his
world.
But unlike all fairytales, ours was not a story with a happily ever after.
There is a part of my heart that will always belong to Aiden. He may not have been my
first
kiss or the person I lost my virginity to – because let’s be honest those firsts are cringy as
fuck – but he was my first love.
The first time you fall in love, it’s strange because from that moment on, no matter how
much you try to get that one person out of your head – they’ll always hold a special place.
But that doesn’t mean that you don’t move on.
Or at least try to move on.
Glancing up from my Econ textbook when I heard the bells above the door chime, I was
immediately met with a warm pair of hazel brown eyes. When he spotted me, a smile spread across his lips as he made his way to the back of the cafe where I was sitting.
“Hey babe.” He leaned down and pecked my cheek before pulling out the chair directly
across from me.
“Hi.” I smiled, allowing myself to get lost in his smile,
Sometimes the best thing that you can do is let go of the things you can’t change and move
- on.
