Chapter 62
He just shrugged and went back to playing with the strands of grass next to him.
It was just after five thirty when we had gotten everyone back in the car. The sky was a beautiful shade of pink, purple, and blue as the sun was in the early stages of setting.
After a quick stop at Chick–fil–A per Mia’s request, Aiden finally pulled into his driveway. Mia was already fast asleep in her car seat while the boys were just about ready to doze off. I carefully put Mia in my arms so that I wouldn’t wake her, while Aiden took the boys into the house.
Ella was watching TV in the living roont witch a bowl of popcorn and a bag of Kit–Kats on either side
of her. Smart woman.
“You’re back!” She looked up when she saw us. She was most surprised to see that all three of her children were exhausted, and ready to sleep. “You managed to get Mia down before 10pm?”
I just shrugged. “She just fell asleep after eating.”
“Alright boys. First one to brush their teeth and get ready for bed, gets to pick the story tonight.”
Aiden said as he reached into my arms to take Mia. I watched amazed as David and William both
bolted up the stairs, each of them eager to be the first.
“I’m assuming you’re spending the night.” He said to Ella. Once she nodded, he turned his attention back towards me. “I’ll put Mia to bed.”
Nodding, I watched his back go up the stairs. The muscles on his back and arms flexed as he carried
Mia with him, and it made tearing my eyes off him just that much harder. Once I snapped out of my little fantasy, I began making my way towards the dining room to gather the things I had left behind.
Ella followed behind me and leaned against the wall, watching as I gathered all of my books. “So how exactly do you know my brother?”
“We only recently met. He’s kind of coaching me this season.” I replied tucking a strand of lose hair
behind my ear.
“You play soccer too?” She perked up at this.
“Yeah. I’m not very good, hence Aiden needing to coach me. I think he gets gym credit or something for it. I’m not really sure. I think he want us to make it past the qualifiers for the championship this

year, but he’s just dreaming.” Truth be told, we’d never made it past the qualifiers for as long as I’ve been playing. It would take close to a miracle for us to make it this year. Especially since there was about a month left until then and we’d only won one game.
“That’s Aiden for you.” She chuckled. “Always the over achiever. I remember when he was younger and he’d lose a game, he’d throw the biggest tantrums. He’d even refuse to eat dinner!”
I couldn’t help but smile at her fond memory. It seems that there’s more to Aiden than meets the eye.
“I’m going to head out. It’s getting late.” I said making my way towards the front door. “It was really nice to meet you. If you ever need an extra hand to help you out, I’d be more than happy to do it. They’re wonderful kids, despite what Aiden says about them being little monsters.”
She laughed at this. An actual, deep laugh. “Oh honey, I’m going to take you up on that. Just you wait until they’re more comfortable around you. That’s when the evil comes out.”
I shook my head as I waved goodnight.
“I have a feeling I’ll be seeing more of you Scarlett.” She smiled as she made her way back inside the house.
The drive back home was quick. There weren’t that many cars out considering it was Sunday night. When I got home, mom had left a note saying she was going out for drinks with a co–worker and left money for takeout. It was nice to know, out of the two of us, at least my mother had somewhat of a
social life.
I decided to order sushi from the place down the street while I showered and got ready for bed.
I was all propped on my bed, Netflix open to the second season of Gilmore Girls, and sushi next to
me when my phone chimed. I looked down curious to see who it was and found a text notification
from my bank.
Confused, I opened it and saw that someone has just Quick–payed me $500. A note was attached. Thanks for babysitting my little monsters today -xoxo
Ella.
Was she crazy? $500? And how the hell did she get my phone number?
I quickly found Aiden’s contact in my phone and sent him a text.
Scarlett: Is you sister crazy????

Aiden: Yes.
Aiden: Why? What did she do?
Scarlett: She just sent be $500 for babysitting today!! What the hell. You were with me the whole
time! I can’t accept that.
Aiden: Ahh. That. It’s nothing.
Scarlett: Nothing?? I don’t know many people just randomly sending strangers they just met that
kind of money.
Aiden: You’re not a stranger. And you earned it.
