Chapter 64
You might think that I’m over exaggerating, however, I get grossed out pretty easily. You see, I’m the type of person that if I walk into a public restroom and I see any bodily fluids in that stall, I physically cannot use that stall.
Too much information, I know but hopefully you get the picture.
Thirty minutes later and I was showered, changed, and once again on my way.
As I pulled out of the garage, I saw a few small children dressed up costumes holding those orange pumpkin buckets.
Did I miss something, again? Last I checked, it wasn’t Halloween yet.
Wait.
I glanced at my phone once again, and what do you know?
October 31st.
Someone remind me again why I even bothered getting out of bed today?
The insurance office wasn’t far, and I was there in no time. Parking, however was a complete nightmare. Serves me right for thinking I could find an available space in downtown Evanston on a
Saturday at noon.
After ten minutes of going around in circles, I managed to find a spot squeezed in between a large
red pick–up and one of those tiny electric cars.
As I made my through the clusters of dressed up kids and their parents, I finally came upon the building I was looking for. Allstate had a small office on the second floor of one of these brand new buildings, just above a café.
Buzzing the buzzer, I waited patiently to be let up. Fancy, I know.
The office was buzzing with customers going in and out. While one person was walking in, another was leaving. The phones were also ringing non–stop, making me wonder if suddenly everyone

bought a car and needed insurance.
Luckily, I was in and out of there in five minutes.
I had just left the congested office and was about to make my way down the stairs when a tall man in his forties came running up the stairs and pushed me to the side.
“Excuse you!” I shouted after him. My words seemed to go over his head.
The next time I attempted to make my way down the stairs, I had managed to get about half way through when my foot slipped and I came tumbling down the stairs. Luckily there were only about six or seven stairs left, otherwise this could have been so much worse.
I had somehow landed on my left ankle, and as I attempted to stand up, I felt a throbbing pain shoot through my foot. Fantastic.
On top of that, glancing up, I realized I had an audience to my graceful exit.
Could this day get any worse?
Mumbling sorry to no one in particular, I made my way out of there as fast as my now throbbing ankle would take me.
Once back in the car, I debated going straight home but I realized if we hoping to eat anything tonight, I’d need to stop at the grocery store. Luickly there was a Jewel–Osco on the way back home.
My trip into the grocery store went without any further mishaps. After shoving all the bags into the trunk of my car and taking the cart back to where it belonged, I began easing my way out of the parking spot.
Thud!
I immediately shifted the gear into park and got out of the car as quickly as I could.
Remember when I asked if this day could get any worse? Clearly, the universe is out to get me today.
As I made my way towards the back of my car, there was another car stopped mere inches away
from mine. It was a red jeep Cherokee and its owner was walking towards me determined.
“You!” The woman shouted. She looked to be in her late sixties. “Who gave you your license? You hit
me! You’re supposed to look before backing out of a parking spot, you idiot.”

I waited for her to finish her tantrum before speaking. “Excuse me?”
“Are you deaf?” The lady exclaimed as she continued to gesture with her hands.
“Ma’am I would really appreciate it if you stopped calling me all of these names.” I replied as calmly as possible. “You’re the one who hit me. I’m more than half way out of the parking spot!” I motioned to her were my car was parked. There was also a very visible bump on the left corner of my back
bumper.
“How dare you accuse me of hitting you!” She shouted. Taking another deep breath, I tried to remind myself that this was probably a sweet old lady I was talking to and that my mother taught me to respect my elders. “You’re the one at fault here! I want your insurance information!”
“My car has a camera in the back!” I argued back. “I would have seen you coming if what you said is
true!”
“Maybe if you weren’t so hysterical and in such a rush, you wouldn’t have tried to squeeze past me when you saw I was coming out!” I continued.
“How dare you speak to me like that?” She asked.
“Because I dare.” I replied. “Now if you wouldn’t mind, your license and insurance information
please.”
The woman continued to mumble under her breath as she walked back to her car to get what I
asked for. In the meantime, I did the exact same thing. I was also sure to take pictures of both of our
cars so that I could send it to the insurance people. Let them figure out who was at fault because at
this point, I didn’t care. All I know is that when I started backing out of my spot, there was no car
coming from either direction.
