Chapter 99
“Tom is at home with the kids and I’ve been trying to reach Jake all morning but his secretary won’t
put me through.” Grace angrily gritted out. “When I get my hands on her, I’m going to make sure that is the last job she will ever have at that company.”
“Wait –” Aiden interjected. “Jake isn’t here right now?”
Grace nodded and I watched as Aiden’s eyes darkened in anger. He quickly excused himself and walked towards the end of the hallway where he pulled out his phone and began angrily gesturing with his arms even though the person he was talking to couldn’t see him.
Looks like he was going all big brother on someone, and I don’t blame him. I’d be pretty pissed too if
my sister was currently undergoing surgery and the her fate – and that of her unborn child – was
hanging in the air. Meeting or no meeting, nothing should be more important than being there for
your loved ones.
A few hours went by and the doctors finally came out to let us know that Ella and the baby were
both doing great. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding, and stopped listening to the doctor after he said they were both okay. Although I hadn’t known Ella for very long, she managed to leave
a huge imprint in my life. She was like the really cool older sister I never got to have.
Suddenly I felt Aiden’s hand touch my shoulder, “Doctors said we can go see her.”
“You guys go ahead.” I replied. “I’ll just hang out here for a bit.”
“Are you sure?” He questioned. “I know she’ll want to see you.”
“Yeah,” I smiled reassuringly and gave him a slight push towards the hospital room. “I’ll go in later.” Not that I wasn’t dying to see the baby, but I figured it was best for the three of them to have some family time before overwhelming Ella with visitors.
As I waited outside Ella’s hospital room, I glanced around at the bright lights and squeaky clean interior. Despite the exterior and reception area of the hospital resembling a hotel, the actual floors didn’t leave much to imagination. The smell of antiseptic and cleaning products was heavy, almost nauseating. The idle chatter amongst the doctors and nurses did little to drown out the crying and yelling coming from some of the rooms. You would think that with it being the maternity ward it would be more welcoming and happy, but other than the pink scrubs everyone was wearing it

honestly looked like a prison.
I’ve never been a fan of hospitals – not that I’ve really spent a lot of time in any, but they just make
me uncomfortable. Too much death and suffering is associated with it.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when someone cleared their throat. “Hi – I couldn’t help but notice
you standing over here.” Said a smooth velvety voice. “Can I help you find someone?”
Looking up, a fairly young doctor stood in front of me. He had a stethoscope handing around his neck and he wasn’t wearing the usual pink scrubs I had seen earlier, but instead a pair of navy blue
ones.
He was a bit taller than me, and his dirty blonde hair gave him a youthful look. All in all he was actually pretty cute.
“Me?” I pathetically asked. “Oh no, I’m just waiting for my friend who is visiting his sister.” I point in
front of me at Ella’s room.
“My bad.” He flashes me a smile. “You just looked kind of lost.”
Of course I do, honestly when the hell do I not look lost.
“No, I’m okay.” I respond, running a hand through my hair. A stupid nervous habit I picked up a while ago.
“In that case,” He smiles down at me. “Are you free to get some coffee with me? I don’t have rounds
for another hour.”
‘No, she isn’t.” Aiden’s voice booms from behind him as he comes to stand next to me, snaking his arm around my waist.
I am going to murder him.
Giving the cute doctor an apologetic smile, I tried to remove Aiden’s hand from my waist but he wouldn’t budge.
Dr. Scrubs – what, I didn’t get his name yet – looked between me and Aiden, trying to read the room. Aiden continued to stare him down, his hand still on my waist refusing to move even an inch. Dr. Scrubs eventually excused himself and left me alone with the devil himself.
‘What the hell was that?” I hiss turning around to face Aiden who flashed me his puppy dog eyes. By now he had removed his hand from my waist and taken a few steps back.

“What was what?” He asks innocently leaning against the corridor.
I gnaw at him. “Don’t give me that bullshit.” I huffed. “He was cute!”
Maybe calling Dr. Scrubs cute wasn’t the right thing to say because in an instant Aiden was standing
in front of me again, towering over me with his piercing eyes boring into mine.
Oops.
“Let’s get one thing straight, princess.” He leans down so that our faces are mere inches apart. “All that guy wanted, was to get in your pants.”
