“Exactly! Who else could Lady Valor possibly be interested in if not my son? The Cherry family only has two eligible bachelors. Don’t tell me you actually believe she chose that bumpkin Cassian from the lower realm.” Leonard shot Raven a chilling glare.
“She’s delusional!” Mack scoffed. “Setting aside whether Cassian would agree to marry into Cloudshadow Sect as a matrilocal son–in–law, someone like
him doesn’t stand a chance.
“Cassian’s a nobody from the lower realm. Since arriving in Forreb, Cassian’s never once shown his face in public. Forget Cloudshadow Sect–even the local families here in Frihamen City don’t know he exists. How could someone like that possibly catch Lady Valor’s eye? Absurd!
“And a lowborn like you has no right to question the Cherry family. The only reason you’re even still standing here is because we took pity on you. You’re nothing more than a clown in our eyes. You don’t have the right to speak here.”
The heads of the other prominent families who had come to curry favor with the Cherry family glanced at Raven after hearing Mack’s words. Seeing Raven dressed in plain, unimpressive clothes, their opinions quickly formed.
Raven’s plain outfit said it all–she did not even look like she belonged in Forreb.
Though Raven had beauty and guts, in Forreb, without noble lineage, all that confidence and flair would only pave the way to disaster.
Raven’s beauty and boldness might turn heads, but without the support of a powerful family, she would only end up as an easy target for others.
And if what Mack said was true, and Raven really came from the lower realm and had no official identity in Forreb, then she had no business opening her mouth in public at all.
“I don’t need your permission to speak,” Raven replied coldly, her eyes sharpening in response to Mack’s aggressive tone.
“And what you said isn’t true. The Cloudshadow Sect chose Cassian, not Felipe. Surely the Cherry family isn’t planning to switch him out behind their backs?” Raven asked.
“Shut your damn mouth! You don’t get to talk here, you filthy lowborn!” Mack yelled.
Raven’s words struck a nerve, and Mack’s guilt swiftly transformed into seething anger.
But it was Felipe who completely lost control. Raven’s claim–especially in front of everyone–that he was not the one chosen by Lady Valor made him
snap.
In a fit of rage, Felipe lunged toward Raven, pointing at her with fury as he roared, “You liar! Stop spreading lies!
“Lady Valor chose me–who else could it possibly be? Cassian? That lowborn who’s just arrived in Forreb? How could someone like him attract her
attention?
“Cassian’s barely even part of the Cherry family. Honestly, we’ve already done more than enough by acknowledging him at all. Now he thinks he can compete with me? What a joke. Has he even looked in the mirror lately?”
As soon as Felipe finished his rant, Raven’s palm landed firmly on his cheek, silencing him with one sharp slap.
“Bitch, how dare you hit me?” Felipe seethed, but before he could retaliate, Raven’s palm met his cheek again with a crisp snap.
“Do you guys see that? These lowborns have no sense of order!” Mack was practically shaking with rage.
With a slow, deliberate motion, Raven flexed her fingers and locked eyes with Felipe and Mack. “If anyone dares insult Cassian again, I’ll snap their necks. Feel free to test me,” she said, her voice cold and measured.
