Chapter 16
The next afternoon, Noel was pushed out of bed while still drowsy.
He pressed his hand against his head, which was aching tremendously. He was about to lose
his temper when he saw Sophie sobbing.
“Noel, your mother wants to fire my parents and kick our family out of the Chiltons. Please help me!”
The blurry images in his mind vanished the moment he heard Sophie’s words.
He jerked up from bed and was in disbelief.
“Impossible!”
He picked up his cell to call his mother to ask about this.
When his mother picked up his call and heard his reason for the call, she hung up.
“We’re not talking about this. It’s final!”
Sophie cried even louder when she heard the short yet definite answer. She hugged Noel while pleading for his help.
“Noel… Please talk to your mother about this. We’ve done nothing wrong. All I want is to stay by your side. You understand how I feel about you, right?”
It pained Noel’s heart to see Sophie in such a broken state. When he found out where his mother was, he brought the Taylors along and rushed to the old mansion.
The old mansion had always been quiet, but there were many visitors that day. They could hear voices from far away.
Noel had no idea what was going on and wanted to wait for his mother to come out of the mansion before mentioning anything.
However, they stood outside for about five minutes before finally deciding to head inside, as Noel could not bear to see Sophie begging.
When they pushed the door open, everyone in the living room turned to look at them.
Every young and old member of the Chiltons and Stella’s parents were present. Eric and Stella were surrounded by them. Noel realized this was not the right time to talk about the Taylors‘
issue.
He was about to leave when Sophie’s mother, who was not able to read the room, suddenly fell to her knees in front of Noel’s parents with tears in her eyes. She sobbed while crying out

“Madam, my husband and I have served your family for decades. I watched Mr. Noel grow up. How can you fire us without a word? Just tell us what we did wrong. We promise to change.”
Noel’s mother’s face fell when her domestic help stirred up trouble in public.
“That’s enough! We’ll talk when we get back. This is the old mansion, Mrs. Taylor. You’ve crossed the line.”
Sophie’s mother cried even louder when she realized this was the old mansion. She knelt in
front of Old Mr. Chilton to tell him her woes.
A happy gathering had turned into a courthouse with someone crying for justice.
The Taylors insisted Old Mr. Chilton give them justice. Noel’s parents were infuriated but could not stop this when it had been brought up to Old Mr. Chilton.
Old Mr. Chilton was always benevolent and had never treated the domestic help badly. When he heard Sophie’s mom crying, he wanted to find out what was going on.
Noel knew things had blown up when his grandfather wanted to look into this personally. He stayed quiet while throwing a look at Sophie.
However, Sophie was too busy drowning in her misery and thought Noel had given up on her family. She decided to bow along with her mother.
Things were spinning out of control. Eric picked up a cup from the table and smashed it in front of the Taylors.
It exploded with pieces of shards flying everywhere.
The noisy living room turned silent instantly.
Eric helped Stella to a seat and went to Old Mr. Chilton. He bowed slightly to Old Mr. Chilton.
“Dad, you should go upstairs with Stella’s parents to have some tea and chat. I’ll handle this. I promise to give you and our family a proper explanation.”
